Mile set to fade away and die

THE mile, the last bastion of the Imperial system, is to be phased out - but not until many more of those baffled by the kilometre have died off.
The government quietly announced yesterday that road signs for distances and speed limits will be given in kilometres under European harmonisation regulations.
David Jamieson, the transport minister, said there were no immediate plans to ditch miles and yards yet, but the time was rapidly approaching.

Damn fine idea too - one way to get the numpties off the roads - do the switch overnight (hows that for a logistical nightmare??!) and jsut have the hearses standing by .... All insurance null and void for a week, only the smart survive! MAYHEM!

I think they'll be on a hiding to nothing there. The cost would be astronomical - I'll bet it'd be £billions not £millions - and what would it achieve?

Really? Sweet - just think of the Yank tanks that would suddenly become practical propositions, never mind cheaper LHD exotics and Porsches. It'd pretty much kill off the Jap import market and the resale value of my car, mind.
Can't see it happening for that reason - too much money would be lost in car depreciation.

They must be short of news stories today.
A source in the Department of Transport said the government would wait only until older drivers who were not familiar with metric units were in a minority before pressing ahead with meeting an EU directive set in 1980.
So we've waited 22 years already, and it'll probably be another 30 more at least.
'It is thought'? By who?
Who cares whether the signs are kilometres or miles anyway?

A kilometre is 0.621 of a mile. However, it is thought the government will not reset a 70mph sign at the accurate conversion of 110kph, but at 100kph in an attempt to reduce accidents.

It would achieve the required chaos and cost to continue to drive Britain down thru Bruseels interference and make the coming invasion easier cos the signs would all be on the "right" side of the road...
