Peugeot Coupe Debuts Next Month

A worthy successor to the 406 coupe?

A new Peugeot Coupé concept car is to be unveiled at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. Known as the ‘407 Coupé Prologue’, it strongly hints at how the forthcoming 407 Coupé will look when it hits the showrooms in early 2006.

From a range of proposals, an ‘in-house’ design by the Peugeot Style Centre was chosen, a design that gives the car a powerful, refined and elegant look.

The front of the vehicle consists of a two-piece air intake featuring a chrome-plated grille. The main lights are wide and generously dimensioned, featuring directional headlamps, while additional fog lamps and three side "vents" are slapped on too.

At the rear, the car features a spoiler integrated into the boot lid that tapers smoothly into each wing while recessed dual chrome-plated exhaust pipes give it a sporting character. The show car sits on 19" alloy wheels.

The 407 Coupé Prologue is powered by a V6 HDi diesel engine. It develops over 200bhp with maximum torque of 440 Nm. It is combined with a 6-speed automatic gearbox with a ‘Tiptronic’ sequential control system.

The suspension is directly derived from the standard 407 range with front double wishbones and drop link, and at the rear the latest-generation multi-arm system.

Standard equipment includes directional xenon main headlamps, front and rear parking assistance, laminated side windows and RT3 telematics with a 7-inch, 16/9 colour display.

I had a 406 Coupe - the 3 litre SE one. Beautiful car. Looked great. Nicely equipped. Dull FWD handling is my only criticism. A great motorway mile easter. Refined, comfortable. I put 60,000 miles on one in two years...and it was still OK when I got rid.

But the main thing about the car was its Pininfarina-designed-superb-looks. IMO the car was as lovely as any of Pininfarina's designs - even those that graced Ferraris.

This car, on the other hand, looks like some American bloater. Then I looked at the picture of the rear and discovered they'd stuffed that up too.

It has better look a LOT better in the metal - this car will bomb. Its butt-ugly. NOT a worthy successor.

Come on Peugeot. You make great cars. Now make this one look as good as it should.

Yeh, looks Yank to me too. Slightly Dodge-ish looks and even a hint of Monaro too I reckon.

hmm...BMW 6 series from the back but no where near as sexy as the 406 coupe which,to me, still looks fresh when you see one.

Is it just me who thinks Peugeot lost there way sometime ago... the 307 is a donkey compared to the old 306. The 206 is a very pretty little car but the GTI is awful The new 407 is very ugly and the new 207 (IIRC pics in last weeks AutoExpress) was a real let down.

The French seem to have changed to building tank-like ultra safe cars with no fun

Definitely agree with the sentiments already posted...this is nowhere near the beauty of the 406.

COME ON PEUGEOT GET A GRIP!

Close, but no cigar Peugeot! It's not as pretty as the 406 coupe - there's too much glass on the side. Either the waistline needs lifting, or (better) the roof needs lowering and the C pillar thickening up a bit. Visibility will suffer, but who cares - coupes are sold on looks.

I agree, too much glass. You have to look twice to see that this is a coupe...
Not half as pretty as the 406 Coupe.

The 407 is - what - a half year on the road now . . . I get bored every time I see one . . . I'll buy a 2nd hand 406 for looks. the V6 diesel engine looks great on paper.

Nope, that was the precursor to the 407SW (or Estate as those outside of marketing call them).

My wife has a 406 V6 Coupe SE - in diablo red metallic with a tan leather interior.

I think it is one of the most beautiful mainstream designs ever. Pininfarina designed and built at their factory in Italy.

The 407 Coupe, hoever, looks attrocious. Why oh why did Peugeot not enlist the services of Pininfarina again? In their stupidity I guess they thought they could do it in house just as well.

Well they can't. Someone earlier noted that Peugeot has lost it's way design wise - I entirely agree. The 205 was outstanding, the 206 average. The 406 pretty, and the Coupe gorgeous.

The 407 is hideous. I thought it might grow on me, but it hasn't. So now, after many years of purchasing Peugeot's, I won't be again until they get their designs sorted.

I was considering replacing the wife's 406 Coupe with a 407 Coupe. After seeing the pics - no chance.

I quite like the front of the 407, but not the back.

I quite like the overall look of the 407SW - at a distance.

This Coupe is simply a huge disappointment. It even makes the front look terrible.

I would imagine it is really only a 2 seater as well. The legroom in the back of 5 door 407 is severely restricted by the Lounge thickness front seats - really just a 2+2 ish if one has reasonably tall people sitting in the front. The coupe can only be worse I would imagine.

Finally I wonder if it can be parked in a UK size parking space. Or rather if, once parked, you can get out. One of the notable aspects of the 307CC (and the 3 door Citroen C4 on the same platform) is the length of the doors. They are enormous and seem to be hinged from way forward - about the place that most headlight illuminate on full beam. I would imagine this is much the same.

No mention of a petrol engine either?

Seconded, thirded, etc, etc.

Complete yank in comparison. Even the four door looks better than this.
