Teenager hurt in crash
A teenager was badly injured when a horse-drawn trap thought to have no lights was hit by a car late at night.
The 18-year-old was hurled from the seat of the trap when the car careered into its rear wheels on a dark stretch of the A259 at Rustington, near Littlehampton.
He was rushed to Worthing Hospital and is recovering from serious head and leg injuries.
The horse had to be cut free from the bent frame of the trap by firefighters.
A vet who was called to the scene treated the distressed animal for cuts to its legs.
Littlehampton Fire Station officer Trevor Worsfold said: "The teenager was in quite a bad way. He was thrown out of the trap across the carriageway.
"The horse was injured but we got it eating hay within 20 minutes."
The driver of the Vauxhall Vectra involved was unhurt in the smash, at about 11.45 pm on Friday. Both lanes of the dual carriageway were closed for more than five hours while crash investigators carried out inquiries.
West Sussex County Council signs on several major roads in the area warn horse and carriage racing is prohibited. Police are checking whether the victim of the accident was involved in a race or travelling alone.
I feel sorry for the horse. This incident is yet another of those "non motorist stupity causes road accident" events that never get mentioned by the "speed kills" cult worshippers.
Still lets carry on dumbing down society back to the amoeba. Perish the thought of horseriders being told to makethemselves visible, they have just as much right on the road as motorists don't you know...... (Actually they have more, horses have a statutory right awhilst motorists drive under license)

no lights = no sympathy.
How many times do I just spot the horse and rider in the lanes near our house in dark clothes and dark horse agaist a dark background. And they wounder why cars brake at the last moment.
Yes i used to ride horses and tried where poss not to go on the road and if I did went with dayglo/reflective bits and bike lights if dark.
feel sorry for the poor horse.
1 hp and no doubt as above said the vector driver will be blamed and prosecuted.

Back in about 1980 something I was walking home in South London from work over a footbridge crossing a major road - above it was an elevated roundabout.
A couple of pikeys ran across the road pulling a rather bent trotting cart behind them and there was an awful shriefing noise from the far end of the bridge.
It turns out they were racing on the road above and jumped the junction, almost got t-boned by a car and the horse went over the side. The b*****ds left the horse there in absolute agony but went and grabbed the cart! It was about an hour and a half before we could get a vet to put the poor thing out of his misery.
