New Impreza shows its nose
Latest grille update shows ugly pill overdose?
We now know what the next Subaru Impreza will look like -- and it ain't pretty.
Or at least, not to these eyes. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so take a look at the latest pic on Autocar's site (link below).
The new car hits the UK in October, although the Japanese get it this month. While it will be more powerful than the existing model (left), and feature wider track and longer wheelbase, the new look is the biggest alteration over the current model.
Discussion
So let's just recap.
1. Subaru launch original Impreza. It's a bit bland.
2. Model evolves into something a little more aggressive (eg. P1)
3. 2nd generation Impreza comes out looking like it has been beaten with the ugly stick until it breaks, then a new ugly stick purchased and then beaten some more. Sales plummet.
4. Subaru think "oh shit" and bring out a facelift model that looks infinitely better. Sales improve.
5. Subaru go back to the drawing board for this new Impreza and immediately think "now where did we put that ugly stick?"
Oh dear.

Back to the drawingboard . . . but I guess it's too late for that.

well it wouldnt matter now really to the Mitsu people because the EVO is no more...
but still... guess Im the first to say... its not TOO bad - in fact I kinda like it
Didnt they just launch the evo IX and are working on its replacement (admittedly not a lancer but it cant be any worse than that impreza)
Um... well... the STI has never been a pretty car, it's more about being aggressive and looking performance oriented. Maybe we'll get used to it, I certainly got used to the 2000-2003 model impreza, in fact I really quite like them now (in blue, of course). The B9 Tribeca doesn't look to bad, I think the difference is that it has chrome highlighting across its grill, so it divides it a little and makes it look less like a snout. I think we'll probably see the same done on the regular impreza, so I don't think it'll look that bad, I think perhaps the Subaru engineers or designers thought that the chrome wouldn't suit the agressive image of the sti and removed it. I dunno. Perhaps on the next all new impreza it will work more convincingly, a facelift in this exampe is just that - a facelift. they've done nothing to the back. Perhaps the next one will show more symmetry (sorry, I don't know how to spell that) and look better.
Ali.
PS: Agree with the comments about the evo designers. My favorite being the evo8 that is still in showrooms (although no doubt about to be replaced - maybe its the 9, I'm not really sure). I walk past a dealer every other day, and its packed with them. Great cars...

it looks a bit like a Seat (Leon, Ibiza...)
You beat me to it......although IMO Seat's efforts turned out better.
Dear oh dear. Someone send them some photos of a P1, see if it jogs their collective memories on how to make a car look decent. Having said that, with all things aesthetic, it's down to personal taste I guess.

It's a larf innit. I love the way Subaru keep sticking that stupid "snorkel" on the bonnet because it's a "traditional" Subaru styling cue (like they've been around for so long....) and then constantly interfere with every other aspect of the car's face.
Did they not learn from the bug-eye version that people don't want to buy ugly cars.

, whatever Barry Boys do to it in 10 years time (when they can afford one) they won't be able to make it look any worse
