Noticed this old vid on the news earlier, so sorry if already covered.

Very, very suspect, no? It seems he was adamant about writing that car off, even though he'd regained control after the initial "skid". Police pinning it on a space saver. I'm not having it.

It does look 'suspect', but I've never driven at > 40mph with a space-saver fitted, so it's possible that it caused unexpected behaviour when driving and braking at speed. It does look like he cut in then brake checked the camera car. Looks like he tries to suddenly move to the centre lane then loses control due to the unpredictable levels of of grip due to the space saver.
Many years ago I (foolishly, but out of necessity) put a crossply spare tyre on the left side of the rear axle of a PB Velox while the other 3 were radials. It was quite an experience. When cornering to the right it felt like the crossply would lose grip but that the radial would 'catch' and cause a very similar type of motion as in the video, but at a much lower speed. My driving style was very conservative for the rest of that trip.

You are bringing back memories! My first car would only understeer. Then I put a crossply on the back offside wheel and created a car that understeered more or less as before when turning to the right, but produced ludicrous oversteer when turning left.
No more odd tyres after that!
Still, the guy in the video looks to be the idiot here. He has a tyre labelled as unsafe over 50mph, and not only is he going substantially faster, he is messing about as well.
