So hang on. Let me get this right. An anti-car lobby has handed over money for a survey to be done, and in a shock result it backs their position.....
*sigh*
In other news, 97% of pistonhead members asked backed higher Mway speed limits and increased driver training....

Yep ,hearing that on the news 'The majority of drivers in London want more speed cameras' gave me a moments shock until the newscaster followed it with the words 'in a poll commissioned by Transport 2000 today'.
Thing is, do the general public appreciate how skewed anything to come from them is?

"More speed cameras should be placed on the most dangerous roads in London, according to a survey of residents."
The exact format of the question can introduce bias. For example "Would you like to see more cameras placed on dangerous roads?"
InterviewEE, "Well its better than sticking them on safe roads and using them to generate revenue.."
InterviewER,"I'll put you down as a yes then?"
The way the interviewer looks, the sorts of people that'll stop to be asked these kinds of questions, how the interviewer chooses to stop people, where the survey is carried out, what time of day (demographic effects) also play massive roles in this type-a-shite.

Did any of you guys check out who did the poll? YouGov did it - www.yougov.com a frickin' internet pollster!
So (I thought) T2000 commission an internet poll, then get thier mates to put down the trees for 3 minutes and vote for thier own view and voila! they have have the voice of Londoners...
However, this particular issue does not appear on the list of public polls on the website... so has a poll even been commissioned?
Given all this I conducted my own poll today of 127,372 random Londoners of which 98.35% said that they want the members of T2000 tied to the back of a horse (or better still a Lotus) and dragged publicly from London to Birmingham.
So now we have two opposing polls... heh heh

Did you ever see that episode of Yes, Minister about polls. Absolutely marvellous. To paraphrase:
Q. Children die in Road Accidents. Due you this is bad?
Q. Do you think people should slow down near nurseries and schools?
Q. Do you think we should have more speed cameras?
OR
Q. Do you travel to and from work by car?
Q. Is it important to you get there quickly and safely?
Q. Do you think we should have more speed cameras?
Polls. They're kak.

(I also always wanted to start a brewary producing beer/lager called "Probably" and have Carlsberg do my advertising)

Thats why their name is quite appropriate now; when they picked it years ago it made them sound as if they were looking at the future, now it demonstrates that they are stuck in the past.
Think about this...
I am constantly amazed that more cameras are not destroyed.
On your next trip out in the car you will notice how many road direction signs are mangled, destroyed or missing completely.
I have never seen a speed camera acidentally damaged or run over.
Therefore speed cameras must be sited in predominantly safe locations!

This is becuase cameras are exempt for the impact safety regulations that are applied to all other road furniture. Hit a lamppost and it will collapse to reduce the impact - hit a camera post and your car gets wrapped around it. Perhaps this is why so many of them are on straight sections of road - they're too dangerous to put up at blackspots.
Slightly off topic but has anyone ever seen a camera outside a school?
