Insurers cut 'other car' clause?
Money-saving move to to hit second car owners
The insurance industry looks set to cost you more -- but not perhaps quite as you'd expect.
Norwich Union has become the first to announce that it's to scrap the clause, known as Driving Other Cars (DOC), that allows us to drive a second car with just third party protection. The move takes effect in January.
With police support, the aim is to remove the scam which allows owners of two or more cars to insure the cheapest one but use the more expensive one on a regular basis. You buy and insure a Polo, for example, but mostly drive the Porsche. It saves money, although you have to hope that the more expensive car doesn't get re-textured by contact with something.
According to Auto Express, abolishing DOC clauses is a move the insurance industry is discussing across the board. Meanwhile, NU has said that this won't affect existing insurers, only new ones -- until you renew.
The reports suggests that insurers Cornhill Direct, AXA, Sun Alliance and More Than could be pondering emulating NU's policy.
Surely it would be more sensible just to modify the clause so that it covers only cars lower rated than the main driver? Anyone found to be abusing the rule could then forfeit their whole cover... Also, anyone 'fibbing' on their application will be subject to the usual risk of fraud prosecution.

Certainly this has been the conditions of the clause on every policy I've had.
I can't believe some insurers cover this. Also, if you had a porsche would you really risk it being nicked to save a grand on insurance? I wouldn't
I mean, get a banger and have it third party. But you have got to be kidding me to have your pride and joy on 3rd party only!!! My god, thats just plain daft!!!
I have used 3rd party only for a number of things, but mainly for simple stuff like driving someone elses car when they have had too much to drink down the pub.... or test driving someones car.... you know, things that happen once or twice a year....
Even more reason to not place my insurance business with Norwich Union then.... gits!

Indeed. Expect to see a lot more uninsured driving going on rather than less

I note insurers are also trying to clamp down on their vague, vague insurance certificates that relate to say "D.Scallywag" where David, Denise, Daniel and Dorothy Scallywag all produced the same insurance certificate. They now seem to be including dates of birth.
So once again, its the acts of the b'stard few, who spoil it for the rest of us.
I have ALWAYS paid my insurance on time and on all cars I own. I have always felt reassured in the knowledge that if there was an emergency, I could leap into someone else's car and drive to hospital/garage/home, etc - not to mention the convenience of being able to collect Dad's car for him should it be needed.
I hate it when the few spoil it for the many.
How would you tax the other car if it didn't have ANY insurance?
This is really confusing, but I'm not surprised from an insurance scampany!
Dave
I'm throwing away £90 every month (2 pints every day), until next July because i've sold my car and moved abroad.
The reason for this is because I had to make a small claim (after having 3 years NC with a car and 4 with a motorcycle).
Not only that, I had to pay an excess of £500, plus the insurance company decided the mechanical parts that failed, would not be insured. Another (£100). Finally, to rup salt in my wounds, they took away my 3 years no claims bonus for an accident that was neither my fault or any other drivers.
I wasn't even allowed to use my legal cover to try and fight back at my dealership who should have warned me of a worn out mechanical item which was visible to them at the last service.
On top of that, I can't simply insure one of my parents cars when I come home for Christmas because it's against the insurers "laws", to do that.
Insurance companies are scum and they make more money than sense.

My word, you dont get it do you.
You swallowed hook line and sinker the insurance companies PR. Its called misdirection, deflect blame onto a non existant third party (particularly some nasty rich porshe owner that everyone hates) whilst scamming everyone and appearing to be doing it for altruistic reasons.
Also, coincidence that this comes out a week after the government announce a new policy of fining people who are uninsured automatically? I think not.
The clause on every policy I've ever had, IIRC, said something to the effect of:
"Third Party Cover whilst driving another insured vehicle"
Hence the so-called scam is simply not possible - never has been, as the Porsche or whatever has to be validly insured too.
Sure, I could insure a Polo and drive around in "my mum's Porsche", but the premium would still be paid on it by someone to an insurance company, and I'd only have 3rd party cover for my P&J (ooops, sorry, my mum's P&J
!!! OK, the Porsche premium may go to a different company, but as the insurance industry is well aware (as it's the whole basis of their business plan), these things average out.
Also, should anyone claim whilst driving "their mum's Porsche" I'm sure the insurance company would do a thorough job of checking every possibility of getting out of paying up, as they are so good at doing, such as checking where the car spends most of its life.
Your third party liability is the same whether you are driving a polo or a porche, as it would pretty much cost the same to repair a car you hit?
They dont pay out fully comprehensively if you wrecked your second car, so why the fuss? And how does this help the police?
The insurance companies are saying its a loophole, but I dont see it myself!
IMO its just another way for insurance to make more money and dividends, as we all know they would do their very best NEVER to pay out by scrutinising your insurance application for the slightest error (which could be just spelling!!)

Seems remarkably well time to me!
I have always been told you can't do it that your "third party drive anycar" is only valid if that car has its own policy in someone elses name.
If this scam was possible the thing i'd have thought everyone in the country with more than one car would do is cover your pride and joy fully comp then your runabout is covered third party. Sure this scam has never been possible.
Say for instance I need to borrow my Sisters/Mums/Friends car - previoulsy I could and was covered third party - now it seems that this right will be taken away. Norwhich Union wont be getting my renewal next year - "Quote me Crappy" more like.
