Headline : Rock dwellers vote for Spanish government shock!

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has this morning issued a formal statement regarding referendum held by the people of Gibralter this week.
The poll, in which more than 90% of those eligable to vote took part, asked the Gibraltarians whether they would be prepared to accept the principal of Britain sharing sovereignty of The Rock with the Spanish.

In a shock result, 98.7% of the voters responded "NO in what, at first glance appeared to be an overwhelming popular rejection of the Anglo Spanish initiative ."

However, Mr Blair welcomed the poll as a clear endorsement of his Governments policy toward Gibralter and the question of Spanish sovereignty.
Mr Blair said "Clearly, what the people of Gibralter want is to be governed by the Spanish, but some people just ticked the wrong box by mistake".

Questioned by journalists as to how it could be that 98.7% of the voters could have made such an elementary administrative error in response to such a clear and simple question Mr Blair went on to say " In a very real sense, Gibralter is the 'Peoples Rock', and we must ensure that the true will of the people prevails.
Some of the people were probably speeding during their drive to the polling booths and the Governments chief medical officer has informed me that this will have affected their hand/eye coordination. In a very real sense we already know that Speed Kills, and we also know what the Gibraltarians really meant and the British Government has a duty to uphold their actual wishes. With the vexed question of Spanish involvement now finally resolved we anticipate the full transfer of sovereignty to the Spanish to be completed by Jan 01 2003. "

Many a true word spoken in jest & all that...

We should watch how this unfolds - Billy L's strategy could turn out to be the blueprint for our Euro referendum..

ie when we see him shaft the Gibraltarians against their wishes, we'll know full-well that Referenda are meaningless as NooLabia just do not abide by them when they give a negative response.

Do Gibraltarians forego meat and only eat Gibralts?

Amazing and wonderful that Gibraltarians are prouder to be British than the 'British' themselves are.

But people do things for a reason. If a reasonably intelligent person (Blair's no fool) does something we can't understand, it's because they have more info than we do.

So what have the Spanish (and/or EU President) promised him if he gives the Rock away?

I have just been out to Gibralter; just great to be there! 2 fingers at Blair and co, nice girls, nice cars and good pubs.

Keep it British, even the Spanish on the Rock voted NO!
