Credit Card Fraud
Watch your card
Discussion
i feal incensed that after 3 months of providing my credit card company with information about a fraud on my account, subsequently tracing the source of the fraud to a specific petrol station, AND finding the attendant who was perpetrating the fraud, that the case has been closed.
where can i get the name and address of Esso retail garages, so that i can voice my concern to the proper authority?

Petrol stations often don't have the same credit card checking facilities as high street stores making use of stolen cards easier. With low paid workers manning the stations often on their own, simple checks like signature comparisons are often not carried out.
They can't even be bothered to check reg no's and sinatures on their own fuel cards. as i proved on Saturday using my Company Fuel Card
Bought the missus a new car on Friday, had a shopping trip with her on saturday (cost me a bloody fortune) stopped off on the way back to fill the tank.
"I'll fill it up you sign for it" says me
I fill the tank and Mrs Maniac realises that her card has got the old reg no on it, i tell her not to worry about it and to explain that it is a new car if they ask.
She was a bit worried, so I went in to pay for it, the lazy git swiped the card, couldn't be bothered to look out the window at the reg no and copied the number from the card, I signed for it (my signature was not even on the back of her card) he didnt even look at the back of the card he just handed the card back to me with a surly grunt and off I went.

I've challenged them on this before. They just say that the machine will tell them if the card is stolen. I posed the scenario that I'd only stolen the card minutes before but this was beyond them. At the end of the day, the monkey on the till rarely cares.

Till monkey should care - I believe they get a small reward for catching a dodgy card. Too much effort for the poor dears, though.

They get an average £50 reward for recovering a stolen card.
Some credit card companies rewrd you with a little bit more dependant on circumstances.
I got £500 reward/compensation from a rather well known credit card company a few years ago.
Mmmm. I made £50 for spotting a stolen card.
The muppet concerned ran for it as soon as I said calmly "Oh, the machine appears to be broken. Let me just get the manager...."
I don't know where he thought he was running to. This was my student summer job on the Cross-Channel ferries. We were 5 miles out of Calais.....

I worked in the Point-Of-Sale supply industry, and learnt that the £50 reward does in no way compensate for a broken nose caused by the thieving pikey who is using a stolen card.. people get very irrate when filling their stolen car using a stolen card, and you don't really want to tackle them bearing in mind your basic wage job...

They also do a similar thing in some foreign restaurants (no I'm not being racist cos I'm not english myself; just stating fact). According to Which you should keep an eye on your credit card when you hand it to the waitor/waitress (like we all do anyway!
) cos he/she could swipe it to create a fake copy...
) cos he/she could swipe it to create a fake copy...Apparently thats why most restaurants are now issued with special hand held terminals for card transactions. I knew a friend who knew a friend who knew.... that had a restaurant who used to do this to people's cards. They got caught they after loads and loads of scams and ended up doing pretty long stretches. Oh well, good to hear some are getting caught.
this reminds me of another card related issue... some people are putting plastic slips into ATM slots that stops the card going in properly (or something similar*). when you enter the PIN someone will watch you, then when you try to get your card back you find that you can't, assume the machine's eaten it, and walk off. The scumbag then removes the slip of plastic and your card, and then uses your PIN to withdraw all your hard earned money.
*-not 100% sure how it works but its fooled loads of people and obviously goes past the PIN entry stage.

I've had cards cloned twice once in Manchester and once in Twickenham, as far as we could tell.
The Banks were quick and efficient in dealing and refunding in fact the Co-op bank phoned me to ask about transactions having spotted the abnormal trading pattern before I had any suspicions, very clever of them as I buy a wide range of goods and services both in UK and overseas.
In both cases the cloned cards were used to buy goods in North London and the M1 corridor.
Both cards seemed to have been ripped off in restaurants where the waiter takes the card away to swipe.

Its a scam there will usually be someone lurking nearby to grab your card, and the ATM doesn't prompt for the PIN; I can't go into too much detail on a public forum, but I did implement some of the firmware changes for card reader in the NCR range of machines.

Todays hot tip!!
When using your card to fill up don't bother getting it to nice round figures (eg £20.00 etc) leave it at £20.35 or whatever. When you bank statement comes 00's stick out like sore thumbs and you can then inform the bank.
One garage I knew of got done for credit card fraud by swiping the card making a note of the number then a few days later entering the card number and taking £10.00 out of the till.
