When are they going to shock us with the proof that 1 in 4 drivers are stupid?

We need regular (every two years?) tests for vision and basic hazard awareness/reaction time for all drivers. I think we'd all be happy to pay in order to weed out the unsafe drivers and the testing could be done at existing opticians using PC based hazard awareness testing. Very little investment required compared to:
1 - The improvement in safety
2 - The cash they'd make from the testing.

They could have put these on sale after administering the test

100% of Volvo drivers failed - can't even see inside lane.

On the serious side I went walking with someone today and he officially can drive and his eyesight was terrible. I asked him to keep an eye out for the signs and I was already indicating and slowing down when he said "there it is..." In fairness he admits that he needs another eyetest but makes you think...

Complete agreement, but I think it is unlikely to happen.

My experience with older drivers suggest that they
may be very poor drivers but

a) UK Gov needs all the extra revenue their driving produces.
b) Most folks are unwilling to admit that even though they
have been driving without crashing for decades, it is
time to stop.

It could be made a condition of getting a tax disc,
or getting car insurance.

It's still not going to happen, however sensible
it appears.
