Just a pat on the back for VBH & 5th gear, over what seemed to me a very decent & balanced review of the Elise last night. Shame VBH diddnt do her sexy little sqeeal that she does when thrashing a car, but hey I cant heve every thing!

They neglected to mention one of it's main features though, i.e. the fact that it's superb grip and balance enable the mobile hairdresser to get from client to client much quicker.

I'm only joking !

Hilarious.

No one has ever said that before - truly a font of comedy.

I guess its the same reasons they made all TVRS with over a 1000bhp - to carry the extra weight of the gold medallions around - and to get them to the petrol station before they close

[insert your own insult here] etc etc etc [/insult yourown insult here]

Ooooooohhhhhhhhhh get her !

I don't like it when you get angry Kitty Kat, especially when you still have your scissors in your hand !

p.s. why do you need to get the gold medallions to the petrol station before they close.

Please God, not another TVR vs Elise thread! [Trollmode]Quick, somebody mention Civic Type Rs being better than both.[/Trollmode]

I saw 5th gear - nicely balanced report. Apart from the bit about stone chips. Aren't stone chips caused by stones? Why do people bang on about certain cars "attracting" stone chips?
Not that it matters if the panels aren't steel...

Could it be the paintwork/airflow over/wheel position of certain cars makes them more susceptible to stone chips? Don't know, just an idea...

Stones are thrown up by other traffic. If there is a stone in the air and I drive in to it the paint gets chipped. Simple.

Blame the "tree huggers". Modern paints can't be spirit based - they have to be water based (something to do with big holes in the ozone layer).

There is no way that a water based paint will "stick" to metal or GRP the same as a spirit based one. Comparing the Quattro (20 year old paint) to the X5 you can see the difference.

One solution is to get the car stripped and resprayed at a "small" repair shop that still uses spirit based paints - it will hold up much better.

Is paint sprayed onto fibreglass more susceptible to chipping than that sprayed onto metal, due to the different reactions to impact that these two materials have?

On a different note, I noticed VBH put the roof cross braces in once the hood was up, rather than building the whole frame first. Does this make the roof easier to put up? I ask, as the only time I've seen one of these roofs constructed was at the local dealer, and he put the whole frame up first.

N17 - sorry - I did put the smiles in to show that whilst I was carping - I wasn't upset.

ne way - i have had a word with myself - and I certainly didn't want to kick off a row in any real sense

I just like the elise a lot and appreciate its differences to other cars an tbh am a little sick of people knocking it - as i have said before on many occasions and i didn't take the advice I was offered last time round - which was to chill out

so - no offence

I'm very sorry as well old love.

I forgot to add my smiley's which didn't help the situation.

I am now off to hug a tree and spend the rest of the day being nice to Porsche drivers

Yep - water based paints really don't stick to GRP very well, and the paint top coat doesn't stick to the under coat very well either - so you can't win!

Consequently my blue elise with white primer (why not use a blue primer??????? *DOH*) looks like someones actually sprayed white paint with a "splatter gun" all over the front.

Yes, it's rather annoying getting the cupholder stripped down and rebuit every 5k miles. The warranty isn't worth a shite either as it comes under consumables. Arrgghhh!!!

Its called etching primer I believe and AFIK is a special paint that sticks to fibre glass and paint sticks to it. I had it when my kit got painted (the original colour was truely awful). Not sure if you can get etching primer in Blue or not, certainly the stuff on mine was white.

Any paint experts on this forum.

This is something which has annoyed me, nice blue Griff, nasty white stone chips. I did wonder why TVr and Lotus could not use coloured primer or better still chuck a little dye in the GRP mix at build time, after all each one is built to order (certainly with TVR, not sure about Lotus).

Can it really be so difficult??

Being built to order doesn't really come in to it. Think about it...

Thought seriously about buying an Elise (mk 1) before I ended up with my Tivvy as an everyday car 2 years ago. (Had a Caterham at the time as well and the Elise was too similar).
Tivvy more practical, comfortable, charismatic (noisier) quicker.
Tried the new Elise the other day and have to say its much improved. Easier access larger boot, better put together etc. Think I'll stick with the Chimaera for now though. Still can't see g/f, springer spaniel and & I taking off for a long weekend in an Elise somehow.
