Three months before the incoming congestion charging scheme will cause increased demand for access to public tansport into London, Transport for London has withdrawn £7m of it's promised £8m investment in London's transport infrastructure.

Train passengers lose out on £8 million rail improvement
22-11-2002

The Mayor’s Transport for London [TfL] has admitted to dropping its promised plans to spend £7.7 million on improvements to rail services in the capital1, three months before the demand for public transport is expected to rise with the introduction of Congestion Charging.
The money was to be spent on lengthening platforms and increasing frequency of services from four to eight trains per hour by providing new trains. But TfL officials have now told the London Assembly Transport Committee that it will only be spending £1 million on research. The improvements were to be carried out along the North London Line and to help develop the South London Metro.
TfL’s main responsibility is running buses while the Strategic Rail Authority and train operating companies ensure the provision of over-ground services in London. However, it is recognised that TfL could help improve over-ground train transportation by helping to integrate services and where possible, provide money for improvements.
John Biggs, Chair of the Transport Committee, said: ‘It is depressing that with the Tube grinding to a halt and the introduction of Congestion Charging in February, two major projects that represent good value for money and quick solutions to London’s transport problems, are clearly not a priority for TfL. These projects will not go ahead without financial support from the Mayor’
Brilliant.

Another measure aimed at pushing the demand back in the direction of the roads and hence the congestion charge scheme to make it more financially rewarding - enough top justif it's continuation? Cynic, me?

Yep excellent - in a Mr burns kind of way

Roughly the same as all the new rolling stock being delivered that can't be used as the electric rails aren't carrying enough voltage !

something like £3bn of new rolling stock (if you include bransons trains just taken off the rails)

even southwest trains have some new stock but can't replace the slam doors for nearly four years !

unbelievably badly managed

He's even failed to do that - he banned bird-seed sellers from the square, but they've been replaced by assorted nutters who turn up and chuck handfuls of seed around anyway. I passed by there the other day, and there looked to be as many of the flying rats there as ever before.

Not to worry - I'm convinced the congestion charge will be a major failure, and will prove to be Red Ken's downfall, not to mention screwing up the plans of other towns & cities to introduce similar charges.

No Mark, you'll damage it. Much better to drag him behind it as you can watch his face in the mirror.

Can't we just feed the "flying vermin" to him.

What have the pigeons ever done to you?!! That would be a cruel and unnecessary thing to do to the poor little fellas.

Never thought of it like that. Right, where's the nearest shop that sells bird seed?

Thats just great. Thats right up there with their other great idea, take half the seats out on the current trains (Connex South Eastern) so there is more room to stand. Or in the real world they can cram more people in
