Walking kills folks!..
Drinking and walking can be as lethal as drinking and driving, it has been revealed.
Nearly half the pedestrians killed on the roads have been drinking, according to new statistics. The findings of an inquiry into the problem by the Transport Research Laboratory are due out next month, says Autocar magazine, which produced the pedestrian casualty figures.
The magazine says that although the number of pedestrian fatalities each year has been reduced by about half since the late 1980s, the deaths of those who had consumed alcohol had risen from 40 per cent to 48 per cent.
It released the details on the day the Government launched its Christmas anti drink-drive campaign. The magazine says of pedestrian casualties aged from 16 to 60, some 50 per cent had been drinking, and more than 40 per cent were over the drink-drive limit.
Of those aged 16 to 35, more than 70 per cent had consumed some alcohol. In 2000, more than one third of all the pedestrians killed were found to be over the drink-drive limit, while for drivers the figure was 22 per cent.
Nearly a fifth of the pedestrians killed were found to be two-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit.
The AA's head of road safety, Andrew Howard, said: "The basic premise of British law is that people have access to the Queen's Highway, unless specifically prohibited. Legislating against drunk pedestrians or their access to the roads would be extremely hard."

Right! Clearly this country needs WALK limits. Everywhere you can WALK there must be a limit to how much you can do it.
The local authorities and police must get together and put up as many WALK cameras as they can possibly muster. People should be fined for WALKing, that will serve the obvious benefits of stopping them from WALKing (because they'll only kill themselves) and raising plenty of revenue.
Why stop there, though? We need WALK humps on the way in to supermarkets, anywhere a car might be parked, in the possible vicinity of small people playing ...et cetera. This will cause anybody WALKing to think about it and not WALK in dangerous areas, like near schools or on housing estates.
Government should put on educational films on the TV and at cinemas telling everybody about the dangers of excessive WALKing.
Let's stop all this WALKing right now!!
PS Don't put your poodle in a microwave, either.
