We tried high occupancy vehicle lanes in the early 80s in New Jersey, and they were always empty because most people can't find a co-worker driving the same route and schedule. We tried it again after the 1990 "clean air act", and they didn't work again. The states were smart enough to get Federal money to build new HOV lanes which today have been converted to normal use, making traffic flow better. The only people who gain from HOV lanes are ecofreaks and bus companies.

Finally!

The HOV system worked really well around Seattle and Atlanta when I lived there. Though both these cities have their fair share of traffic problems they are a bit mickey mouse when compared with London.

They should have done this with that infernal M4 bus lane when they first opened it.

Matt.

Does one person's pie-enchanced-girth count as two people?

You could get four in a TVR then...!

We dont really need buses at all, lets be realistic.
Theyre slow, they pollute(no emissions tests), starting and stopping every hundred yards, theyre dirty, expensive to ride on, cause congestion and besides all that for most of the time theyre empty.
Fat lot of use they are.
Me? Ill stick to the car thanks, its just totally the opposite to a bus, in other words, it works, buses dont.
Scrap em. Oh and MPs too.

What we need is special lanes for big engined cars. A V8 gas guzzler wastes a lot of fuel when it's sitting in traffic. We should be allowed to get to our destination as quickly (and efficiently) as possible.

It's a great and fairly argued plan, but as soon as the government cronies see it's from the ABD, they'll treat it like a letter from Nick Griffin. The whole idea of bus lanes is not to improve congestion or help the environment, it's just a way for this control-freak government to direct where it's citizens go.

I was about to say exactly the same as Matt (plotloss). I thought the HOV lane in Atlanta was a splendid idea as I was always in the back of a town car and therefore an HOV!

I thought as long as 50% of the seats were used, that counts.... so you know what that would mean!

If they're going to let us use them then expect to pay, we do for all their other cock ups!
