And no TVR SpeedSix or AJP8 because they're designed to produce lots of NVH.

does anyone else think the VW1.8T engine is over-rated? I've driven a few and they all seem coarse and bland - inoffensive, but nothing special.

Nice five valve/cylinder head though. Good head deserves rewarding.

I've always found them quite pleasing to drive, plenty of pull, minimal turbo lag in the 180BHP+ flavours and smooth enough for a four pot. My real complaint is the lack of aural excitement, it just never seems to get angry, just fizzes away. VW gets the worst from this engine, SEAT, Skoda and Audi all seem to make better use of it, the best version being the Octavia vRS, strangely enough.

All engines nominated and tested were in vehicles with a base price under $50,000.

In the US maybe, but in the UK - M3?, ML500?

Anyway got to agree with the straight six bit, particularly the BMW versions but my personal favorite;

N - can't hear it for the noise.
V - can't feel it for the vibration.
H - can't feel it for the harshness.

but it's got a power delivery like a baseball bat in the face!

The power available from the VW 1.8T is terrific of you tweak them. Jabbasport's demonstrator car is currently running 418bhp reliably!

An interesting thread but how about a top ten car engines, not just current. I'd nominate, not in any particular order.

Jaguar XK
Bugatti T35
Cosworth DFV
Ford Kent..from 105E to Twink
BMW M six cylinders
Olds/Buick/Rover V8 (including Repco F1)
Small block Chevvy
Chrysler Hemi
Ferrari V12 (250 GT/GTO)
Porsche 911

The BMC A and K Series engines would have to have a very honourable mention, the A has been available in 803, 848, 948, 970, 997, 998, 1071, 1098 and 1275 production forms with single or twin carbs, with fuel injection, with a turbo and the factory have used a conventional supercharged version for record breaking.

I'd also include the Rosche Talbot engine but it was only really used by the factory and, in absolute terms, only in small numbers, great competition record though.

I thought hard about the Climax range but they were all pretty good and as a consequence I could not pick a particular type to include.

I also wanted to include the Vanwall for family reasons but it was only used with success in the one model, the mid engined version made little impact.

As for the others, well put them in your list, worthy as they are they aren't in my top ten but I've always been a bit eccentric, what sane person would call themself Gnomesmith?
