A Norwegian Car Transporter called "Tricolor" with over 2,800 new cars on board has sunk in the English Channel, having had a shunt with another ship called "Kariba". The Kariba is still floating and heading for port.

Sky news has reported the cars on the Tricolor were BMWs, Saabs and Volvos.

Anyone expecting to give the Mrs a new BMW, Saab or Volvo on Xmas day may like to call their dealers to confirm their vehicles have not become amphibeous (sp?)

Bit more than WD40 needed to get the water out of the electrics then!

Salvage experts Dutch of course, are saying that its straightforward procedure, to "remove the cars, one by one" to what end i wonder, surely even reduced to component parts they would be useless for re-use-RIGHT????????

It is certainly possible to salvage wheels, tyres and some other components and the engines could certaily be used for some purpose. I have sunk the odd inboard boat and you would be suprised what can be done.

Hang on a minute! Surely these cars are transported in SEALED. Water tight Containers! SO why can't the car just be salvaged and reused. The Ship was also carrying oil, which I assume is also carried in a sealed/seperate contianer/hold. Otherwise there taking this lubrication thing a bit too far!

The ship capsized and sank - the cars will have been smashed about on top of any water damage, but look on the bright side - thats less Volvos on the road.

I did hear that the ship's captain was a woman - just trying to prove she knew how to dip a cars headlights.

they just drice the cars on to decks just like your average ferry, they would'ent be boxed up individually that would cost a fortune

The cars may be purchased through the usual channels.

From picture on sky news it appears to be lying on it's port side almost completly awash, don't know it it's aground on a sandbank (but guess so).

Makes a mental note not to buy any Volvo,BMW or Sabbs in the next couple of years or so!!

Why limit it to a couple of years?

I doubt if you will be able to afford a new Volvo in the next couple of years if the safety nerds get their way.

With all the added costs of SIPS and Airbags etc, how much is an automatic life-raft dispenser gonna load your prices by??

i remember an insurance guy telling me that any vehicle that ends up in salt water is automatically cat A right off.Makes sense although if its fresh water its sometimes not even written off.
It'll be interesting to see what the paint work is like when they get them out.I know Land Rover us a salt water tank to advance aging on componants, but they obviously take no notice of the results.
