Petrol prices are set to soar by 1p per gallon in a few weeks due to strikes and fears over Iraq.
Prices rose in the last week and today drivers were warned to expect further rises in coming weeks.
Esso has increased its prices by between 1 and 2p a litre this week
BP and Texaco also put a penny on a litre and other firms look set to follow.
A spokesman said prices could rise by a further 3 to 4p a litre over the next few weeks, driving fuel up to around the 80p per litre mark which triggered fuel protests two years ago.
Oil firms blamed escalation of military activity ahead of a possible war with Iraq as the main reason for the sharp rise.

Time for another fuel protest methinks.

Great. Lets have another fuel protest!! We might get rid of that w*nker Blair this time...

Am I alone in thinking this? I have always backed our Countries decisions to go to war in the past. I thought the Falklands conflict was entirley justified as the people who lived there have a right to be defended, Same with the last Gulf conflict when Iraq invaded Kuwait. But this latest threat is IMO complete bollocks and a good excuse for the USA to throw their weight around and prove how strong they are. Why do we have top get involved at all? Or am I missing something?

Blair is on a sticky wicket here, because no-one I have talked to so far wants this "war"...

must agree, this latest war threat is I think the States way of throwing their weight around and saying "we are the best don't mess withus".
Don't get me wrong September the 11th was terrible .The attack on Afganistan and the search for Bin Liner is a justified, but coz they didn't get Soddam the first time does not mean we all have to go for him again just because the States says so. Me thinks the way Mr Blair is a bit sheepish about the subject at the moment , is beacause he now probably feels that the States are going to launch war with everyone.
sorry for the ramblings but the glass has been very long tonite.......................

IMHO its about time Bliar started listening to the taxpayers as I for one would be well up for anything along the lines of revolt, blockades etc to show the muppets that they can't just walk all over us.

Time to opt back into the company fuel scheme methinks. Problem is that there will be a cost of fuel has gone up so we are going to tax you even more policy alteration.

B@stards, I really have had it with stealth taxation. I may even vote for IDS. Bring back Portillo, all is forgiven - you may even be electable at the moment .

Isn't it sad that Labour have to be SO bad before you contemplate voting for IDS. I'm with you mate. I just wish the alternative Government were a slightly better alternative. At least they've said they'll put a stop to this fcuking over of the middle class.

NI ceilings...mutter...mutter....petrol tax...mutter.

So how is fuel card tax a 'stealth' tax?

Its a massive benefit that to me was worth up to £500 a month, I expected to be taxed on it. The taxable benefit of a fuel card is clearly defined and you should be aware of that before you decide to choose one - if you get a choice.

It was more the fact that it is likely that the taxable benefit will go up by far more than the rate of inflation due to a perceievd fuel price rise, but it is unlikely that the agreed milage rates will change at all for those with their own cars that I was moaning at.

For most of us (i.e. those with cars with a decent engine) the agreed rates have plumeted over recent years (even including the fact that you can claim the higher rate for more miles now).

Don't go to Australia - go to *Austria*. Just come back from an XMAS break there and 92RON petrol (for your "normalmobile") was a meer €0.82 per litre in one petrol station - that's 56p per litre!

Even 98RON Shell Optimax was just €0.96 - 66p per litre!

That's because they've got the worst drought for years at the moment.
Oh and they continually complain about the high price of fuel

Hi guys,
Normally I don't venture outside of the Lotus Esprit section of PH but I clicked on whats new and it directed me here. Sorry to here about the gas prices over there (I'm in USA). Too bad the Petrol people are using the possibility of an impending war to spike up the prices. To tell you the truth most people in USA could care less if Iraq or anyone else funded terrorist to cause trouble anywhere unless in affected the USA. We did not really care too much to Bin Laden till he took out the embassies in Africa and the ship in Yenmen. A lot of people make reference to 9/11 as an American thing. A lot of people from different countries were casulties other than the USA although most were from the USA (a lot were from the UK, with some Dutch too). The current administration is trying to keep anything bad trying to reach out shores, what really makes us mad is if someone screws with or economy and way of life. Like Somalia, try to deliver food there and they shoot at use, pull out the people and they are on their own. They really don't have anything we want as long as they don't cause us any problems or act a conduit to bring harm to us they can do what they want. To terrorists many people from the UK, Austraila, etc. are the same as people from here. Just a bunch of people from western block countries. So in Bali they got a lot of Aussie's, could have been just as easily where the UK people hang out. You are the same to them even if you are not Americans just a bunch of Chistian based white westerners like as in non-fanatical Muslims. Aside from that I would think the gas prices are linked to other factors like greed and taxes as we have companies like BP, Shell, Fina and others selling their products here at lower prices than in Europe. The prices have gone up here. It is currently at 1.30 regular and 1.40 per gallon in US dollars. I think fear of American oil reserves keeps the prices low, the last time the prices spiked the goverment released in to the market just a touch of the oil reserves it has on hand that made the crude oil market plummet. That keeps oil compaines from greedy price hikes. There is no reason other than taxes and duty that the prices of fuel should be that high in Europe. Am I wrong that most of the fuel costs in Europe are taxes? Plus that you have this thing called VAT, How does that work?
