Woman drove car with 27 dogs

Barbara Byrne told police she was driving to the beach
An animal lover had 27 dogs in her car including one on her lap when she was stopped by police on a dual carriageway, a court heard.
Barbara Byrne, 60, was also smoking and holding a can of drink between her thighs, Huntingdon magistrates were told.

Two police officers tried to pull over the former care worker in her Renault Laguna estate after they saw her driving at 40 mph and veering across the A1 dual carriageway in heavy rain at Brampton, Cambridgeshire.

She carried on driving for more than 15 miles after officers sounded sirens and flashed the patrol car's lights.

A second police car had to be used to box in her car and force her to stop on 13 May last year.

Beach walk

Five dogs were travelling unrestrained. Another 22 small ones were in a cage in the back of the car.

Byrne later told the police that she had been driving more than 100 miles from her home to take her pets for a walk on the beach at Skegness.

Byrne of Manor Close, Tongham, Surrey, was found guilty of careless driving, failing to stop and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

She was banned from driving for a year, fined £50 and ordered to pay £75 costs.

TFFT! Some real world sensibility survives in the Beak's Court in Surrey.

"driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence."

This keeps cropping up all over the place. I thought it meant driving with no licence, but it seems to be too widespread.

Anyone know what it means............?

It means "driving otherwise than in accordance with licence" held by the driver.

In this case possibly for the transportation of animals. My guess is if you are carrying more than a statutary number of animals you need to hold a comercial carrige licence of some type....... MADCOP!?!?!

I think it's a general purpose charge that can be used like "Careless driving" at an officers discretion with respect to an infringement the is not necessarily catered for directly in law, but still needs to be dealt with.

I stand to be corrected though.

ps.This one would have been dealt with in Cambs as that's where the offence was reported. It's a shame it didn't happen a little earlier as I left the Cambs CPS in May last year, and this would have given a snigger.

Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence is (I think) when someone only has entitlement to drive automatics, and is driving a manual; or is driving a class of vehicle that the licence doesn't cover.

Fantastic stuff,

This is my neck of the woods. I remember reading about it in the local papers and wetting myself as the orriginal report was so funny.
Even better though is the fact that when the case was to be heard in Huntingdon Magistrates Court some time ago she did not appear.
She got confused driving around the ring road and could not find the way to the Court!!
AND she said she couldn't leave her dogs alone in the car to attend.
I'm glad she's not local.
