I've heard that work will begin next year to introduce tolls on some of the motorways.

Does anyone have anymore information? How much will the tolls be? When will we have to start paying? An extensive list of roads that will be affected? And lastly, how long will the disruption be whilst they implement it, Toll booths don't spring up out of the tarmac over night!!

Any comments / more information, greatly received.

For my money Kevlar, Toll Booths won't work here. We've all seen the French example of toll booths, but traffic density there is minute compared to here, and they can divert almost always to an almost equally fast toll-free road along-side. Can you imagine toll booths here with our motorway traffic density? Having one or two like the M6 toll is one thing but applying it over all the network is quite another. They would cause chaos!...It would be like having an accident spot every 5-10 miles!

That's why I think they are desperately striving forward towards a pre-paid card reader system......so has not to cause gridlock.

I agree with you 100% 8Pack! There was mention of the standard road tax being abolished and extra tax placed on the fuel (as if we need to pay anymore tax on the fuel!). I drive up the M3 everyday to get to work. Queuing at the 'Toll Plaza' each morning to hand over even more money just to get to work is going to be less than pleasant! And the thought of paying basically to get on to the M25 really winds me up!

check out the tollbooths at the dartford crossing, at peak times, the q goes back at least one junction either way, put several toll booths on the motorways and in several locaitons, pretty soon motorists will desert them and go ontot he a-roads, just the thing the motorways were desgined to get rid of - traffic on a-roads
