Transport Minister sings the praises of bicycles

What is the significant feature that allows cycling to flourish in Denmark, the same as Holland; perhaps the most cycle oriented nation ion the western world? They are both flat. London is also relatively flat. Here in the West Country there are a great number of hills, many are longand steep. They won''t worry cycling enthusiasts, but the vast majotity of the population won''t be interested unless perhaps they live in a flat area such as East Anglia.

Also those countries have extensive cycle paths and special traffic lights for cyclists. In this country cyclists are expected to mix it with cars or in Leicester where I live they have made bus and cycle lanes. Would you want to ride on a road where an uobservant, polluting "wall" is starting and stopping in front of you?
