Pischetsrieder presents the Papal Phaeton

Pope Benedict blessed with 450 horsepower

Pope Benedict XVI has been presented with a specially equipped Phaeton by the Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Dr. Bernd Pischetsrieder.

‘It is a particular honour for us to have the privilege of providing Pope Benedict XVI with a fitting limousine,’ said Pischetsrieder during the presentation in the Vatican City on Wednesday.

It's wicked Bernd!
It's wicked Bernd!

The extended wheelbase version of the Volkswagen Phaeton is finished in black and is powered by a 6.0-litre W12 engine with a holy 450 bhp.

Seeing as though Bernd presided over the sale of all the 'Rover' marque names to BMW...maybe the (cardinal) Wolsey limousine would've been more appropriate! yes

Black eh? Well, it does match Emperor Palpatine's robes I suppose...

I wonder if he'll be getting a Toureg for the popemobile, or sticking with the ML.

How many cars does the Pope have the use of?

What with manufacturers falling over themselves to offer the Pope cars he must have loads tucked away in a secret holy garage somewhere

And given what a premium was made on the sale of his old battered Golf I (sold for 190000 EUR IIRC), he's a rich man, too

But truly appaling that he's riding in a VW. Only a Lancia or Maserati would do

Pfff... It's neither an honour nor a privilege. It's a calculation: Cheap media exposure!

No, I reckon that's 450 benedict's holy prayers with all that armour - still not enough for a miracle though.
