Extreme Machines
0-60 competition in readiness for August Show
Discussion
I wouldn't have said that the Corvette had no chance! Normally this car would run 1/4 mile in less than 9 seconds, which equates to a 0-60 in less than 2 seconds.
I thought the fastest street legel 0-60 was a caterham JP wotzit in 2.9 seconds or similar. I seem to remember a J Clarkson prog about it. Anyway the Audi and the 'vette have NO chance!
The reason it wasn't quicker on the day, was only due to the poor condition of the track.
Its all a question of grip - the CCSE guys (custom car street eliminator) are all very fast, certainly sub 3 sec to 60 but they are all rear wheel drive. The 'vette has run 8.8 at over 160 at the dragstip and John Sleaths audi (not four wheel drive!!) makes over 1000hp and runs 8.6 at 170mph, thats 0-60 in 3 secs assuming totally linear acceleration...
I have heard that the surface they used for the 0-60 tests was not great either...
Anyway four-wheel drive is cheating

yup, taxed, tested and insured. Part of the rules for the class they race in. Also they race on street legal treaded tyres although they can remove mufflers at the track. On the race day all the competitors have to complete a 25 mile cruise (into wellingborough) where they have to refuel on unleaded and also do a 10 minute hot soak/restart (which can be a pain if your running a detuned race engine...). Other than that the class is pretty open - anything goes on the engine front, turbos, blowers, nitrous, huge capacity (one of the guys runs a 706ci motor - thats 11.5 litres...
), whatever!! no blower there mate, just an enormous 4 barrel carb and a huge shot of nitrous. I do wonder how these things get through the MOT tho' - there is a guy with an aston martin (well its shaped like an aston...) who runs in this class and the supercharger climbing through the bonnet is actually taller than the roofline!! no guards on the belt either!
my kinda car...

My mate has just completed a official run of 2.8 in his 4 wheel drive 450bhp turbo'd with ALS Dax Rush (road legal) been in it scary stuff, to bad he missed out on this. The guiness world record clarification changed this year to production car to rule out the twin engined biked engined cars and such like, including his, so its still held by the RS200 for now
The guy who recorded the quickest time, was the one who was complaining about the CCSE cars tyres.
Apparantely his Audi(not John Sleath)didn't have a battery or passenger seat, so wasn't exactly street legal either!
It seems like the organisers did all they could to make sure the CCSE cars would not win, even turning down the chance to hold the event at Santa Pod!!!
Read the report and email on Ian Jacksons site-www.silverfoxracing.org.uk/pnr2003elvington.html
There is also a discussion on the dragster world forum about this event! They recon that by plotting acceleration curves based on timing ticket data (for an 8sec car)the 0-60 times should be from 1.33 to 1.48secs!!!
