On-Line Petition against Road Charging / Vehicle Tracking
Discussion
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/
Without going through the many arguments against Road Pricing (are there any for ?). The summary from the petition (270,000 signee's so far) reads:
"The idea of tracking every vehicle at all times is sinister and wrong. Road pricing is already here with the high level of taxation on fuel. The more you travel - the more tax you pay.
It will be an unfair tax on those who live apart from families and poorer people who will not be able to afford the high monthly costs.
Please Mr Blair - forget about road pricing and concentrate on improving our roads to reduce congestion."
Sounds worth a few moments of your time ?

Nige, did you spend a few moments of YOUR time to even look at some of the other threads in this section alone, never mind the General Gassing forum as well?
There's about 6 now (inc. this one) all with the same link attached.

Err, yes actually. I searched for "petition" in all forums without success (ie activity in last three months). I assumed that anyone linking to this would have the word petition in the article somewhere, and it would be an active forum.
Sadly the search didn't turn up a relevant entry, and still doesn't even with my own thread now present.
Perhaps we could ask the web site admin why this is so ?
Wrong: Yes, Ignorant half-wit: No.
Thank you

Sarah Kennedy was talking about this proposed car tax scheme on Radio 2. Apparently there is only until February 20th to register your objection to the 'Pay As You Go' road tax. The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell anybody about it. Therefore at the time of Sarah's comments only 250,000 people had signed it and 750,000 signatures are required for the government to at least take any notice.
Once you've given your details (you don't have to give your full address, just email address and house number and postcode will do), they will send you an email with a link in it. Once you click on that link, you'll have signed the petition.
The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.
On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill.
If you are concerned about this Orwellian plan and want to stop the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website (link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible. Sign up if you value your freedom and democratic rights -

I have signed this myself, it was a quick and easy two minute, two stage process, after entering your details in the web petition an email is sent to you, you have to click the link in that email to confirm your signature. If you then go back and look in the web browser window you just came from, it shows a confirmation message.

Er, yes, it is the same . . . but you can only sign it once from a single email address, so posting the text four or five times doesn't make any difference!
When I signed, it also worked first time, and I had my auto-reply from Tony within a minute, so could confirm my virtual signature quickly and easily.
