PACTS......may be of interest, part deux.
Discussion
Received earlier today by e-mail:
1) Mr Tim Yeo MP has put forward a Private Members Bill to put the time forward by an hour across the year for a trial period, which would create lighter evenings. He is supported by:
Peter Bottomley - Sir John Butterfill - Mr. David Chaytor - Mr. David Heathcoat-Amory - Mr. David Kidney - Mr. Robert Marshall-Andrews - Lembit Öpik - Richard Ottaway - Dr. Desmond Turner - Mr. John Whittingdale - Sir George Young.
PACTS has long campaigned for changing the clocks as road casualty rates increase with the arrival of darker evenings and worsening weather conditions in the winter. Every autumn when the clocks go back and sunset occurs earlier in the day, the casualty rate rises. The most recent research estimates that adopting British Summer Time in the UK would result in around 450 fewer road deaths and serious injuries, including between 104 and 138 fewer deaths.
The Bill is due to be read a second time on Friday 26 January. According to Parliamentary process, the Bill needs 100 MPs in the Chamber to vote in order for it to be taken forward to Committee Stage, so PACTS would urge people to approach their MPs to support this Bill.
2) The annual assessment of the value of preventing road casualties has been published on the DfT's web site.
3) The DfT has published road safety research report 71, Post-Court Road Safety Interventions for Convicted Traffic Offenders. The report's authors recommend a classroom-based intervention with modules of learning, delivered by trained professionals over a number of (at least six) sessions lasting at least two hours each and requiring the offender to complete homework between the sessions.
Whilst on the DfT's site -came across these two recent reports. Made interesting reading - well, of what I've read of them, so far.
