Apologies if re-post.

Just heard news that rules for positioning of speed cameras is to be relaxed. The report initially gave the impression that this could lead to a steady reduction in roadside cameras. It then went on to say that the decision to place them would now rest with local authorities, and that they don't need evidence of high accident rates to put one up now.

Great, I bet they'll use that power responsibly!! However dubious the value of them for accident reduction was in the first place, they don't even need that excuse anymore!

That will be good news for the local authorities. If it causes more speed cameras to appear. We will then be needing signs telling us that there are no speed cameras in the immediate vicinity.

Old Dutch recipe springs to mind:-

Take one Motorist Milking Machine and add a 185x70x15 tyre, two litres of petrol and a match to make a 'Tuf-Tuf Barking Gatso'...

Light it and it goes 'WOOOF!'.

Perish the thought...

I dont always agree with the use of speed cameras but they are pretty hard to argue against....if you arent speeding then you have nothing to fear!

True, but there's an additional aspect you've overlooked - panic brakers. Drivers whose speedo indicates they're doing 33, and they whack ont he anchors just to be sure.
Couple that with reduction in speed limit to begin with, and an ever more hectic work environment when you've got to see all your clients pencilled in for a visit.
The bottom line is the Government realised a long time ago, they had numerous options in front of them to introduce new taxes by stealthy means.
It's all very well talking up the safety aspect these cameras purport to create - but that's just more slight of hand to distract the majority from the real purpose of the cameras - less patrolling police required/avaialble to administer fines. Plus no arbitrary judgement to get in the way of collection said revenue!

All we need is a few more pot holes, cones and roadworks and no one would get over 30 mph anyway

surely the current placings have nothing to do with accident rates anyway?
