driving in the snow!

just had the most enjoyable drive to work ever!......about 4 inches of snow fell last night in Billericay-Essex, so I bypassed my passat, and nicked the wifes Honda HRV 4x4 VTEC.....a proper gay "grass and gravel" 4x4 if there ever was one......I must say I took great delight in belting past long cues of 30 odd beached 2wd cars on the hills to work, 6000rpm in 1st gear did the trick I found.......I was gutted when I got to work in basildon - which is nothing new I suppose - cant wait fro the drive home!
I walk to Brentwood station every morning...and looked out the window and thought "s*it this is going to be a hairy walk in"...thought driving to the station would be an easier option as I get to the station at 5.30 am so no traffic to crash into! but then remembered that my S2000 was probably not the best option in the snow!! haha

yes your quite right - while going down a hill into a cue of beached cars trying to come the other way up the hill, I braked and nothing happened.......I was going to crash for sure.......thankfully the pavement was too inviting and quite clear and wide enough - so around I went - I soon learnt to plan well ahead when using the brakes!........the HRV is probably one of the lightest 4x4's on the road, but everyone was having real trouble braking on the slush - which is now turining into ice.......gulp
Global warming will result in a colder Britain ironically enough. With the ice caps melting due to increased temperatures this dilutes the salt content of the oceans. The salt content is vital for the gulf stream to function. The gulf stream brings us warm water from the other side of the atlantic thus keeping us warmer compared to countries on the same latitude. without salt wate it will ceae to function making us just as cold as Canada.

oh yes Billericy was so nice, helpful twonk in his BMW pulled out of a side road and proceded to climb the gentle hill we were on. obviosly he was fully familiar with his rwd dynamics, so when the tail stepped out a bit he brakes. he may have heard my thoughts on this, but he did manage to get going again as did i.
shame the disco behind me seemed to be stuck, then stalled their engine. i did have a bit of a chuckle.
strangely the only real problem was in Billericy, soon as i got out of the town the roads were back to slushy stuff rather than ice. knew i should have used the legacy not the focus.

Please for a second don't think I am anti 4x4, in fact I am hoping to pick up a Discovery next weekend, but come on, nearly loosing it and saving yourself by going up a (luckily) empty pavement is hardly clever stuff in today's NIMBY/anti 4x4 climate!!!! You are going to feel a charlie if you bounce off someone's P&J or kid by getting it wrong! PH is not know for it's sympathetic approach to daft driving!!!
Please take my previous rant as it was intended, a fairly lighthearted dig at some daft driving in the snow, and by all means explore the limits (and beyond!) of your car in a safe place!!
