Why spend Billions of tax payers' money to get to the middle of nowhere where no-one lives, especially when the existing UK road network is in such a damn mess. We are now going to be subjected to pay road charging in places like Manchester for getting to work as the government refuses to pay for the alternative public transport such as the Metrolink.
I thought this may be an early April Fools - who the hell is going to pay for this - more English/European subsidy for the Scots who all want to be independant anyway? Please, not another money wasting example such as that ugly Scotish Parliment building or every government IT project. Surely there are more pressing issues in the UK such as poverty, hospitals, education and crime? No, forget them, lets build a tunnel for some tourists and a few sheep farmers.
I can see why you might want a tunnel between Spain and Morocco - it makes it easier for the illegal immigrants to get into Europe on their way to the UK - but I can not see the justification in this one.

The economic advantages of building such a tunnel would take decades, possibly centuries, to break even on the thing. Whilst I appreciate it would be brilliant for the citizens of Lewis the extended payback period should see this utter waste of taxpayers' money never going ahead.

As a Scot and someone with a lot of links to the Hebrides I can realistically say it'll NEVER happen.
FACT - ALL governments have done EVERYTHING and ANYTHING to depopulate the Hebrides over the last 150 years. 1 typical example was denying monies to bore a new well on Vatersay in the late 60s saying the families "can move to Barra" without any other choice (now a causeway had been built but 35 years AFTER the last family with children left) as a prime example. The minimal £25000 needed for the well was spent by Inverness CC on councillors expenses....
Do you really think that billions would be spent for the 10000 or so on Lewis and Harris, or the two anglos who go there on holiday(although its a great idea!!!), when the Chunnel is not even paid for by now?????
This is just another press diversionary tactic by these totally incompetent w4nkers in Shitehall to move attention away from their coming defeat(s) in the next few months.
I agree with the original poster that these monies should be spent on massive improvements in Law and Order and schooling especially in view of the appaling state of childcare and policing in Britain in 2007 (see UN report!!) nuff said???
