The Tories gained control of Oxford County Council with a manifesto commitment to end the 'War on the Motorist'...

Yet in Friday's Oxford Mail, I read of a further seven new 50 mph limits to be inflicted on the county's roads. These are:

B4027 A40 to Islip. Currently a nice, sweeping country road, but which is used as a short cut by those avoiding the gridlock of Oxford.

A329 Milton Common to Thame.

B4012 Thame to Postcombe.

B4011 Ambrosden to Bucks boundary. Another convenient back road used because of the lack of main roads.

B4437 Charlbury to Wootton.

A417 A420 to East Challow. Another nice country road which should be improved, not constipated with a speed limit.

A361 Bradwell Grove to Lechlade. This major road is now clogged for most of its length from Burford to Swindon by 50 mph restrictions.

All this nonsense is based on a total of only 17 fatal and 33 serious accidents in the entire period from Dec 2001 to Dec 2006...

The picture is clear. An abject failure of any attempt to improve these roads, just a feeble ocuncil pandering to trendy tree-huggy world-carbonising scaremongers.

OCC's Tories simply lied when they promised an 'end to the War on the Motorist'!!

What is really needed is:

1. Upgrading of the A40 to motorway status from the M40 at Wheatley to the M5 at Gloucester.

2. Upgrading of the A34/A43 to motorway status all the way from the M3 at Winchester to the A1 at Stamford.

And to hell with enviro-fundamentalists.

This one I can live with. Sadly used as a racetrack most weekends by many drivers and motorcyclists (especially) between Thame and the A41 junction near Bicester. It is a great driving road but always catches out the unwary if the temperature drops - just look at the car parts in the hedges. There could be more education about the road use eg lots of
junctions onto it, farm traffic, slow lorries, horseriders etc.
Not a lot of evidence to suggest any of these considerations enter the minds of these speeders (and I'm talking about excessive speeders 80 / 90 mph plus) despite the warning signs.

Will only the Oxon part of the road carry the speed limit ?

'Only 17' is not only to me!!!!

And it would never work (as good an Idea it is) The A40 near crickley hill in glos has been trying to get planning for a dual carriage way for about 20 years now, Just imagine how many more years it would take to get a motorway down/up that hill! (it's not the hill that's been trying to get plans approved but the highways agency!_

No - we just need an adequately testiculated government which will tell the nimbys and tree-huggers to go and get stuffed. Or to emigrate.

Why, when we have such a woefully inadequate and absurdly expensive public transport system, can opposition to road improvement be justified?

Bugger the bloody great-crested frogs or whatever - our roads are in an utterly dire state and demand improvment and upgrading.

As would be the case in most other European countries.....

I do feel dispare when I hear about Tories continuing to bugger the motorist as well as all the socialist labourites! My local council has a tory for the head of transport and highways, him and his right hand man have just ear marked 1.5 million for 'consulancy fees' to find out if congestion charging would work in our city. Money well wasted at a time when they are having to appy for central govnerment permission to put the council tax up higher than the guidleines allow.

While I would hope that any motorist that has an interest in their freedom is keen to see that back of 'new Labour' I worry that a Tory government wont see us many improvements. Will they dispand the scamera partnerships, scrap road charging plans? Probably not!

60 national to 50...

That will make soooo much difference, just more stupid overtakes past limited trucks.

The lack of overtaking skill these days is an issue in itself but lets not go there. However compounded with the issue of slower overall flow then any overtaking is going to be much more dangerous
