The budget 2007
More bad news for motorists
The Chancellor Gordon Brown has just delivered his budget speech in the House of Commons, and as we feared, there’s more bad news for motorists.
As predicted, the Chancellor has hit hardest those cars that fall into the top tax bracket based on CO2 emissions. The road tax charges for vehicles in the top category (over 225g/km CO2) will rise to £300 this year, and then to £400 in April 2008.
Petrol duty is set to rise by 2p per litre this year – although the change is deferred until October – with a further 2p rise the following year and a 1.8p rise per litre in 2009.
Performance motoring just became even more expensive.

I second that!
Any policitians on here willing to start fighting our corner? If not we should set up our own Pistonheads Party.
This may not go down well with everyone but here goes....
Why doesn't he scrap road tax completely and put 10p a litre on fuel he could add an extra 2p to cover the carbon offset too to keep the tree huggers happy - surely that would be more fair. I'm looking at the thick end of 600 extra a year in 2008 just for the pleasure of free wheeling on our public highways! Apparently he is only punishing 1% of motorists - so what is the point if it is going to have such little impact?!

More smoke and mirror's, the current rates are available from the following link..
www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524
As you may see from there, the number of different rates/categories are over complex like the rest of the tax system. More places to hide hikes in the future?
However, I suppose the thing that makes it ok is that we need to look after the environment or we are all going to die!

How pleasant it would be to see the smug git run over by something suitably politically incorrect and gas-guzzling... Anyone got a spare AM Virage I could perhaps borrow?
No better make a Hummer to ensure you get the job done properly 1st time

Good point... Or an LM002...
An utterly fvcking stupid piece of "green" gesture politics, which will have absolutely no impact on the UK's utterly negligible contribution to global C02 emissions. Yes, this tiny island is going to save the planet. Give me fvcking strength.
Politically, heaping everything on Band G cars is an obvious move. They clearly believe that all Band G owners are driving around in +£30k cars, can well afford to be soaked, and wouldn't be idiot enough to vote Labour anyway.
Only the last part is true in my case, and if it doubles again from next year (not beyond the bounds of possibility by any means), I shall give up on performance cars, buy a nice Fiat Panda diesel and get my kicks out of depriving that miserable cvnt of as much revenue as humanly possible.
