I recently purchased a 98 XJ8 4ltr V8 and when you rev the engine above 300 rpm white smoke comes out of the ehaust, the car is very clean inside and outside, it has 157k on the clock with a full Jag service history, it drives perfectly and has had a reconditioned gear box,new timing chain, new shocks and a full service, any ideas please.

My dad had an Opel Manta (auto) years ago that did this. It was a valve related to the gearbox, and the white smoke was the trans fluid burning off (as the valve was faulty), and the engine was sucking in the fluid. Cost him £40 in the end.

Hi PJ - could be indicative of a failing head gasket - any cooling consumption or water residue noticeable on the oil filler cap when removed?
