The Urban Dirtbox - ITV London Monday 14th May
Discussion
Any program where people are allowed to express their opinion is good. Whether you agree or not with their opinion, the fact they can state that opinion is important.
All we have to hope is that the series is fair and has episodes about 'why I hate public transport' and 'why I love my V8'.

Thank god I have somewhere to vent my anger at the pitiful programme I have just watched. I agree that opinions are free, but to try and convince people that all 4x4's are bad is plain ignorant and downright sanctimonious. His parting comment said it all : I think there horrible. Firstly the truth, any car is both deadly and a high polluter if not driven properly, or looked after properly - did this get a mention? Secondly, the clip whereby a towed 4x4 ploughed into a towed 1998 Honda Civic sideways and nearly drove through it - I'd have liked to see a benchmark with another car towed into the side of a Civic - there wouldnt have been a great difference with that mode of failure in that age of car - the passenger compartment would have collapsed in any case. Thirdly, my 1999 Freelander has an urban cycle CO2 emission of 248g/km. A BRAND new 2.5 Mondeo estate gives out 252g/km, and every winter when it snows up here in Derby my car is as safe as it gets. I have never careered out of control or hit anything thanks to the grip and the large tires, and downhill descent control. I'm not saying mine is the best car - or example, all I am saying is that This programme presented a shallow argument, and tainted 4x4 drivers.

Agreed!!!!,
however I can sympathise with people who suffer from the arrogance of some people who just buy a Chelsea Tractor to "Keep up with the Joneses" and block school entrances, like the smarmy female in the programme or the Git with the Pimpmobil (belongs in Harlem). The dumb bint didn't even know where the 4x4 Switch was for, or what mileage she did... and the pathetic screams when she was shown how to drive a 4x4.... as daft as a donkey!!!
Freedom of decision and personal choice for all IS PARAMOUNT, however I can't agree with a 4x4 purely for posing or the schoolrun in town......BUT I'd never go down the road of prohibiting/excluding them for their decision, dumb yes, forbid, nay!!!
And why do these eco schemes allways look like rubbish tips? In one programme they put up a `home made' solar panel on the rear of a (pretty dim) blokes house. It looked abso f*ckinglutely awfull, like a thrown away divan bolted to the roof. Diabolical both outside the house, and inside with the heath robinson connection to the hot water system with a great big hole in the wall and rubber insulated pipes from the `panel' sticking out of the wall. I would have thought as soon as the `team' left, the council would be round telling him to remove the eyesore. It would seem that some people are trying to induce the government to remove the need to obtain planning permission for panels etc. cant wait to see what effect that has on the built environment?
The program was a disgrace.
Whatever reputation Sargeant had as a serious and intelligent journalist, built up over the course of a long career, has been totally destroyed by 1 hour of pathetic jingoistic one-sided cack.
ITV shouldn't be allowed to screen this drivel.
It was the epitome of dumbed down tv for those with a single figure IQ.
I barely watch ITV these days and that show reminded me why.

I spent the evening discussing the issue of 4x4 with my wife supporting the freedom of choice even though the idea of Chealsea tractors is funny when you really think about it.
Nevertheless I defended the right to spend the money as one sees fit...
then the next morning going in our car to the train station we reached a roundabout... congested that there was little point to fight for each square inch of space... instead of being let go (like other drives usually do) a black Range Rover Sport aggressively moved 50 cms ahead stopping us and those behind us to leave the roundabout at a different exit for no good reason
it is common courtesy to let people in on your left if the road ahead of you is totally blocked, especially when the other exits are empty
well not if you drive a Range Rover Sport apparently
in that communist - tree hugging program one thing I believe was correct: if you drive a 4x4 you are a more aggressive driver.

I still beg to differ in opinion - unless you have proof that EVERY 4x4 driver has driven like this sanctimonious bromide you described in the Range Rover - you cant say that ALL 4x4 drivers are more agressive drivers. I Know a handful of Directors at our firm that drive top end 4x4's such as the Range Rover sport, and Porsche Cayenne, and they seem to think that they are above everone else, and indeed drive inconsiderately - but thats certainly not the case with all. My Mother in law drives a Suzuki Alto and has a similar manner to the person you have just described.
I refer to my previous thread that Any car can be dangerous or polluting if driven incorrectly and I stand by it. I agree that there are certain types of 4x4 that may be driven by those who consider themselves more important than the rest, but There is a damn sight difference between that Range Rover, and my Freelander (including about 60 grand!)
I would share your annoyance in that situation - That simply was not on - But I bet if it were an equally top end car with that driver he would behave similarly.
