BBC Top Gear Blunder

BBC admits that caravan fire was staged

The BBC has been caught out again and has admitted that the end to last year’s caravan special of Top Gear was staged.

The Mail on Sunday forced the BBC to admit that the flame-filled finale of the episode was a fake, and that £1000 was spent to have a fire engine and six crew members on standby.

A Dorset Fire Service spokeswoman commented: “They wanted us to make it look real. We treated it as a genuine fire.”

The BBC commented that viewers had not been misled because the sequence was obviously ‘slapstick’ with a ‘sitcom ending’.

The episode featured the TG trio causing a huge tailback after attempting to do a three point turn in the road and then attracting police attention, crashing their caravan into a bollard and reversing it over a tent.

The end of the piece saw Clarkson in the caravan trying to cook chips, starting a small chip pan fire and asking the others (who were outside): “How do you put a pan fire out?” before yelling: “It’s no longer a pan fire, it’s a van fire.” Then there is a small explosion and the boys try to smother the flames with foam mattresses – which also catch light. Soon after, they are joined by the Fire Service who deal with the ‘emergency’.

A BBC spokeswoman commented: “It was Top Gear taking a comedy look at caravanning. Of course the fire service was on site. We wouldn’t contemplate starting a fire without having relevant safety measures in place.”

What is it about today and caravans? PistonHeads, touring matters.

No, I think it's an excuse to publish a photo of Hippy Haired Clarkson.

Big surprise, dont know much about caravans but normally they are full of calor gas, are they not? If so JC and the crew would have been half a mile away not 10 feet away ;laughing at it.

this news has cast a large black cloud over this glorious sunny monday, this reminds me of finding out santa claus and the easter bunny were just commercial frauds. next they will be telling us the stig(s) are really just skilled track day drivers and not a superhuman bred solely for top gear............

It's incredible that people can even think it wasn't staged.

Just like the race to the North Pole, some of that had to be staged. No way was it all real.

I am always staggered at how many people think telly is real...
Having worked in a news room and seen how much news is ...errr... well .... errr... sort of ...ummmm... made up... perhaps I am just a cynical old hector.

The news is that there are actually some Daily Mail readers out there who thought it was real and needed their favourite snoozepaper to investigate and produce an exclusive into how we are all being lied to. Or something like that.

"The BBC commented that viewers had not been misled because the sequence was obviously ‘slapstick’ with a ‘sitcom ending’."

Obvious to everyone but the Daily Wail.

Something on top gear is scripted?

Wait, do you mean it really wasn't a photo finish in the race to Switzerland? What, you mean they actually EXPECTED Hammonds Bedford Rascal to tip on it's side when he did a Scandinavian flick on track? (still, one of the funniest bits of TV ever)

The beauty of Top Gear is it's so clearly scripted yet doesn't rub it in your face
