What the hell was going on on the A1 yesterday?

I got off a 9-hour flight yesterday morning in Doncaster and started the 30-minute drive home, which lasted 3 hours. 2.5 of those were spent driving about 5 miles on the A1 South. What the hell was going on? I didn't stay right to the end of it because I turned off to seek alternate routes. I know there are roadworks at the roundabout near Retford, but unless they'd put traffic lights there I can't possibly see how there was that much congestion.

The main road between Retford and Worksop was closed in the morning - this wont have helped matters but I dont think it would cause the congestion you experienced (and I drove past)
