Millions Of Motorway Drivers Do 100mph Daily

Survey also says that the majority of offenders are male

Some of these drivers are speeding.
Some of these drivers are speeding.
Nearly two of every three male drivers admit to doing 100mph on Britain’s motorways, according to yesinsurance.co.uk.

In a poll of 4,000 UK motorists, 63 per cent of males said they had driven at more than 30mph over the national limit, while 36 per cent of women admitted to doing the same.

The survey also found that 90 per cent of men and over three-quarters of women admitted to going over 70mph.

However, statistics developed by Norwich Union through a survey of 5,000 motorists showed that motorway driving is up to 10 times safer than low speed driving through urban areas.

Paul Purdy, of yesinsurance.co.uk, said: “The research indicates that female drivers are generally safer than men when driving on motorways."

"This correlates with scientific research on driving behaviour, which points to the fact that women are generally less likely to undertake risky manoeuvres or drive at high speed."

Ironically, whilst men are far more likely to speed than women, the research also shows that nearly a third of men think they are better drivers than women.

hmmmm, so this plonker assumes that just because you are going faster you are instantly driving dangerously?? so if i was doing 100 leptons at 1am with no-one about, is that thus more dangerous than doing 60mph on the motorway when it's icy conditions on a cold winters day during rush hour??

i think doing 100 is far more dangerous. what a retard.

Also this kind of thing depends entirely on the truth from those being asked.

This large number of people admit going over the speed limit, yet do we see major hike in accidents on motorways?!

What the article doesn't make clear is if these drivers claim to do so repeatedly or as an occasional or one off thing.

I simply cannot believe any great percentage can speed to that excess on motorways as they are too crowded to acieve those speeds in any event.

Paul Purdy, of yesinsurance.co.uk, said: “The research indicates that female drivers are generally safer than men when driving on motorways."

Mr. Purdy has now shown himself up as being an Idiot.

It should read, that the research shows that women drive slower than men.
A bit like the woman I saw just this morning driving to work in a built-up area, brushing her teeth while driving.yikesbanghead She wasn't speeding, so must be driving safely.

Could possibly be a 328GTS/GTB or 512BB? (front may be wrong for the latter) silly

I see what you are saying but I'm sure the 328 had a flush grey grill... Could be wrong. I feel I may have caused a distraction to the seeeding story though!

I was driving home last night and saw the traffic on the other side of the road was at a standstill and backed up as far as I could see. At the front of the queue was a Ford Focus, about 18" from the kerb, stationary with hazzards on.

As I passed I saw the female driver was doing her hair with a portable hairdryer whilst applying lipstick!! Luckily for her, it was a bus stuck immediately behind her car and the driver did not have a sight line in to the Focus to see why the driver had stopped. 60 drivers minimum in the queue behind were patiently waiting in the queue believing they were approaching an accident or roadworks I imagine.

nothing said about the merc, jag and vectra occupying the middle lane????

Most women I see on the motorway are sat in the middle lane at 70mph so must be driving safely and correctly........whilst all the men are swerving around them crashing into each other!!

I still can't believe people think faster=more dangerous. Speed is only a factor, not the main concern. The main concern is driving ability combined with relevant conditions and experience with car control.

Car type is important too. A Porsche is more stable and brakes 10 times better than a 9 year old VW Polo maxed out at 100. Slam the anchors on, and the car will wobble about, and not slow down anywhere near as much as the Porsche. Also the Porsche will handle better, and more likely to be driven by a more experienced driver.

I feel 80mph is a better max speed "limit"

Min car speed should be set to 60 mph.

Caravans should be banned, and blown up.

Lorries should be banned, we should copy the germans and use a rail infasructure to transport goods, freeing up the roads of congestion and reducing pollution.

It would seem that ALL the 'evil men' that took part in the survey managed to get to 100mph and back without dying of speed. Thus by applying simple logic and statistics I can deduce driving at 100mph is 100% safe. I will be attempting to explain this to a speed camera shortly.

Very much the beautiful form of the 208 GTB...

Lets stick to what's important. We all know these statistics will rear their ugly heads every week, so lets embrace them for what they are; something used by ill-educated people trying to pass themeselves as someone who has ACTUAL experience in relation to what they are trying to convince us.

We all on here know that women are not generally better drivers than men. This is not to say by an extent that they do not have the capacity to be equally good drivers than men, but the very genetic make-up of the female sepcies does not lend their interests to be flared by mechanics and machines the same way men do.

But this is purely based on my (and our) opinion of what a better driver is. Is it someone who can manouver to a point in the fastest possile time? Or is it the person who transcribes the most amount of concern for objects/people around as they make this journey - this is what these statistics are concerned with (being from insurance companies whose business it is to minimise risk).
