Boy, 10, convicted of driving offence

A 10-year-old boy was convicted today of driving a car while disqualified.

The youngster, who cannot be named, admitted driving a Vauxhall Cavalier near his home in Ore, Hastings, East Sussex, while disqualified from holding a licence.

He had already been banned for a previous motoring offence.

He appeared at Hastings Youth Court where he also admitted taking the Cavalier on June 1 this year without consent and driving without insurance.

The case was adjourned until next Wednesday when the boy, who appeared in court
wearing a green hooded fleece jacket, will be sentenced for the offences and another driving matter.

Magistrate Ken Melsom told the boy: "You are disqualified and you are also ten years old and children are not allowed to drive anyway.

"You do not have the ability and you do not have the strength and you do not have the skills that are needed to drive.

"You are a danger to yourself. You could have killed yourself and just as importantly you are a danger to other people using the roads. You are not allowed to drive."

Mr Melsom also addressed the boy's parents, who were in court, saying: "You must do everything in your power to see that he does not drive motor vehicles. I am sure that you will do your best."
quite unbelievable..

Strange reaction from the court You naughty naughty boy !

Nothing against 10yr. olds driving (did it myself!), but he should be driving on private land, guided by a responsible adult.

I'm not so sure judging by their previous efforts that the parents best is acceptable. Compulsory parenting classes together with classes on how to give the kid a whack when he's out of order.

Bloody liberal parenting gone mad.

shall we speculate as to what punishment he will recieve?

It will be nothing lets wait and see. But in my opinion this is one of the most seriuos crimes a minor can commit.

HE COULD EASILY HAVE LOST CONTROL AND KILLED SOMEONE!!
And I beleive thats serious obviuosly the courts dont because he has already done it befoe because he is already dissqualified!

Does anybody know how many people have been killed by stolen cars driven by people under 17? 1 is too many

Is somebody making this up. Own up now.

How on earth any judge could possibly consider the response given to be appropriate.

Should have been more on the lines of (Whilst suspending the ruffian off the ground from an earlobe grasped between finger and thumb) "Now listen here mister, you do that again and i'll tan yur backside you hear. Now up to your room and stay there till you learn yur lesson....and no tea either."

As for the parents, an image of Mr & Mrs Wayne Slob appears in my mind, i'm lost for words.

Should have done him for not wearing a seat belt as well, as it is clearly impossible whilst standing on the seat trying to see out the windscreen.

Scum.

I reckon the Parents should face a serious penalty also, such as removal of dole rights etc.

Oh, I forgot, its the criminal thats the victim. Lets all get together and hug

That's what I was just thinking. Do they endorse a DL that you don't have?

I think you're automatically disqualified if you're underage.

Was at work chatting to a copper based in Hastings a few weeks back, and he came out with this little gem:

In Brighton, 1 in 85 people have a criminal conviction.
In Hastings, 1 in 3 people have a criminal conviction.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

This story cracks me up...wonder if he will gte banned for a year and made to retake his test in a year (when he's eleven)?

I actually had some friends that got banned before they were 17, one mate rode a moped at 16 and another mate wanted to buy it off him so the guy took it out on a test drive...unfortunaly the police caught him without a license and banned them both (even the mate that it belonged to with a license)...so it can happen. There bans were up before their 17th birthdays but insurance was a pain in the ass for a few years for them!

Surely that implies a fairly pain free death? Not appropriate methinks...
