MEP plans EU build ban on cars faster than 100mph
Discussion
Hot on the heels of Gordon Browns signing away our rights under a European Parliament have you seen this latest outrage.......
[i]The EU Parliament's environment committee is considering a proposal to ban all cars capable of exceeding 100 mph (162 km/hour) from 2013. The proposal, put forward by LibDem MEP Chris Davies, is based on the arguments that cars that go faster than 100 mph are "over-engineered to a ridiculous degree", and that for safety reasons, they need to be heavier, and hence to burn more fuel.
"Cars designed to go at stupid speeds have to be built to withstand the effects of a crash at those speeds. They are heavier than necessary, less fuel efficient and produce too many emissions," says Davies, who resigned as LibDem group leader last year following an unfortunate email exchange on the subject of Israel.* "At a time when Europe is worried about its energy security it is sheer lunacy to approve the sale of gas guzzling cars designed to travel at dangerous speeds that the law does not permit."

surely thats crazy everone will just do what the lorries do and use the limiter as cruise control
and surely its safer to have a car that can do 200mph and only be at 100mph (as your nowhere near the limit of grip/handeling/brakes etc) than to have a car that can only do 70mph and is at 70mph (because your'll be on the limit of the cars preformance and if you need to speed up to avoid something you can')
doug

This comes around every few years. Whoever proposes it makes themselves look silly.
Even the 250 kmh limit is voluntary, so a 160 kmh
limit stands no chance.
Would you lot in the north west mind terribly voting this goon out next European election? Since all he ever seems to have done is come up with idiotic proposals, throw around accusations of racism apropos of very little, and do his best to sink the closest his party has come to a credible leader in a long time.
Odious little shit.
Odious little shit.

That is not true. The main aim of all manufacturers is to pass legal requirements or consumer tests. Some manufacturers also do more and consider "real world safety", but not many.

No need to worry. Bikers had this kind of crap many moons ago, when a German topkob wanted to restrict their power to 100bhp...and he did everything he could to get the ban.
Curiously, when other countries were told BMW bikes stood to make millions from this as their bikes already were engineered to and limtited to 100bhp, it started to fall.
Simply, when such nonsense as this comes up, the EU set-up actually works in our favour, as there are so many more bureaucrats to pay off, buy or just debate with, it falls away.
As far as limits on speed and power goes for cars, the Germans would never allow it, and our Latin brothers in Italy, Spain and Portugal ( throw in the Greeks, too ) would never, ever, allow it.

This is old news, really old news in fact. We've done this one a few times before. It was one MEP's proposal, and as such, it had to be considered, which they did, they all laughed and then they chucked it out.
Spot on. Furthermore, even if the whole of the Parliament had voted in favour of such a proposal, it wouldn't mean anything. The European Parliament has no remit to create new policies at all, let alone pass them into law. People in the UK in particular get shat up because they hear the word "Parliament" and therefore assumes that the EP must be like the Commons at Westminster. It is absolutely nothing of the sort. It is a powerless talking shop that occaisionally gets to rubber stamp other people's legislative ideas ... and of course even then the legislation can only relate to the limited policy areas in which the EU has any authority, and the policies will already need to have gained approval from the member states. Being an MEP ... talk about a non-job.But if they made you have a 1.0 car, or even say a 700cc (Smart, anyone) that weighs 700kg, it IS ECONOMICAL, and light, and low emission +safe(ish). Ooops. Better scrap this post huh? except the mitigation is that I still overtook dozens of people in the Smart. Don't worry folks, you can still have fun with a small economical car... just takes some getting used to, and you can still drift them...
