Prime Minister proposal to ban/restrict use of older cars
Discussion

all sighn please
Several EU proposals across the years are dangerous to the classic car movement. One that has been under consideration is to ban the use of cars older than 10 years. Similarly, Edinburgh City Council is considering the banning of cars over 15 years old from the town centre. These, and similar, proposals directly threaten the classic car movement, and encourage the manufacture of new cars, with the attendent environmental issues of sourcing raw materials, manufacturing, distriuting and scrapping the spiralling supply of new vehicles.

ocks, but nice to have it confirmed.I am very interested to know why people are still signing this, after it has been debunked by no less a body than the FHBVC itself. Also, the Edinburgh proposal was abandoned before it even got to be considered, and what's more, it was several years ago too.
Like the bulk of the petitions on the governments website, it's pure Snopes material.
Remember the story of the boy who cried Wolf? For the sake of the classic car movement, we really must ignore scaremongering bo
ocks like this, and save it for when it really matters, otherwise no-one will pay any attention at all when something genuine comes along.
If you do have to sign it, then don't forget to sign the one protesting about the scrapping of the Red Arrows, and the one petitioning the SA government to free Nelson Mandela whilst you're at it.

A petition. That'll teach them.
could always burn a councillor at the stake instead eh!
Every five years my classic car club (The Riley Motor Club) commemorates its foundation by driving the original route of the 1925 London to Edinburgh Trial. In 2005 we were welcomed with open arms to Edinburgh and given special permission to park in Parliament Square next to St Giles Cathedral right in the heart of the city - 30+ classic cars, many pre-war and all of them premier division soot-pumpers.
From what I've been able to discover, there is no government proposal to ban older cars. There is a desire to reduce city centre air pollution which, Edinburgh City Council considers, is contributed to by older vehicles not being able to meet recent emission levels requirements. An outright ban them is one option, charging a fee for permission to bring them into the city is another.
Stuttgart (Germany) is pioneering a scheme, Edinburgh is keeping an eye on it - and I suspect other city authorities are too.
Whatever happens, a national ban on all older vehicles is extremely unlikely.
What may happen (my guess) is that emission testing will be tightened up and vehicles of any age that fail will be more robustly dealt with - which doesn't seem too bad an idea, does it?
