More than 700 UK customer deposits have been taken for the new Nissan GT-R in 48 hours.

Nissan UK has now requested additional supply of the £52,900 supercar to keep up with demand.
First deliveries are now expected in March 2009.
Paul Willcox, managing director of Nissan Motor (GB) Limited said: ‘Waiting lists are not unusual to have for a vehicle of such high performance, specification and value but there is a limit that people will be prepared to wait.
'In order to meet demand we are now starting to negotiate vigorously with Nissan Europe to secure further volume from our production facility in Tochigi Japan.’

Nissan needs to stick to 500 cars a year to try and keep a little bit of exclusivity to its flagship (and re-sale values for its customers!!!)

I dont see the need to artificially ration cars that many would want
If its £33k in Japan, it shouldnt exceed £43 here
If the restrictive supply is lifted, there would be sufficient sales to make plenty of profit at £43k and the UK dealer network will have plenty of specialist aftermarket business both service and sales - not to mention the actual poor sap that works his life to be able to afford a price picked from the air.
The more sensible the price (£39 wouldnt hurt for base model)the more cutomers happy, the more dealers happy - and 1000 times £5k profit is same as 500 times £10k - it is just with the lower price, more people are better off - from the production line right down via Importer, dealer to customer...

The day before the pre-orders went live Nissan was saying on their website "first come first served", which is normal, right? A lot of people placed (admittedly speculative) deposits with dealers, especially Middlehursts, a long time ago, and a lot more not so long ago (December onwards). According to the latest info. from Nissan, there is some kind of "lottery" going on as to who will get cars when. Doesn't matter when deposits were placed, they say.
If Nissan can supply 400 cars in April 2009 (not March anymore), these being without satnav (another story), and 300 in September 2009 with satnav then I reckon everyone will be pretty happy. Otherwise there will be a lot of disappointed and pretty annoyed people, whether die-hard GTRists or converts from e.g. Porsche. Delivery dates are supposed to be notified to customers end of May this year. After that, expect quite a few people to drop out.
And Nissan and the dealers both seem unable to get people's addresses, email addresses and colour/spec orders right, so far.

it there fella! I'm a builder, if i could build 500 houses and make £10,000 profit on each and people were queing up to buy them, why the hell would i decide to sell them at £5,000 profit and have to spend a shed load more money building another 500 houses to make the same profit??????

it there fella! I'm a builder, if i could build 500 houses and make £10,000 profit on each and people were queing up to buy them, why the hell would i decide to sell them at £5,000 profit and have to spend a shed load more money building another 500 houses to make the same profit??????Bungle

Speed = good
Fun to drive = better
Whilst it may feel great to own the fastest car round your typical circuit I personally dont feel speed and driving enjoyment are always the same thing. I'm sure many may disagree but I'd pick a Caterham, Elise/Exige or similar every time over a gadget laden supercar despite the latter representing engineering achievement / progress.

If I had £52K I would have been one of those 700, I think it's only going to be worth more in a year or two if it's looked after. 500 a year is not enough for a car of such value. They make more M3s than that, which cost more and don't offer anything that the GT-R doesn't (apart from speed-sapping oversteer) and a badge that some poor individuals think buys them the 'Ultimate Driving Machine'. People keep slating the car because it's too heavy , too much of a tech-fest etc. but that's just silly, you've got to look at it for what it is, a Japanese GT car, capable of humbling many supercars and being a particularly good driver's car at the same time. Obviously you don't have to like everything about it but I'd question if someone was a true petrolhead (or pistonhead come to that) if they can't recognise the achievement made by Nissan's engineers (and marketing men) here. It's quicker than a Porsche Carrera GT at the 'Ring for god's sake, which in turn is quicker than a McLaren F1, until recently the world's fastest car. For £52K. Is anyone surprised it's selling like hot cakes?

Whilst I agree on the shambles side of things (Not a big fan of the dealers assistant calling and asking me what spec I want midway through my day and telling me its needed by the end of the day when I havent really looked into it and am away from the office). I am also being told that once my build slot is confirmed there is no turning back fair enough you may say however I have never even seen nor driven the car and I have never heard of a manufacturer insisting you purchase a car without even driving it first.The real story is the shambles of the ordering process.

However there is also a HUGE amount of misinformation out there which I cant remember so wont list all but the few that bothered me....
1: Cars are on a lottery system . Wrong my dealer informs me that the cars will be equally shared amongst DP so if 10 people ordered premium cars one at each DP the first ten premium cars will go to one at each dealer etc.
2: Once specced you will be given a build slot in may ish time. Yet again wrong according to my dealer who told me I would be informed within about 10-15 days so by end of this week to mid next as i specced mine a week or so ago (we will wait and see)
also colour of the car can be changed up to 3 months before delivery but thats all that can be done.
