Porsche: TfL Report Shows CO2 Rise

Carmaker claims TfL-commissioned report proves CO2 will rise after C-Charge hike

A TfL-commissioned report has shown that the new £25 C-Charge will increase CO2 by 182,000 tonnes, Porsche has claimed.

According to the carmaker the findings of the King’s College research on CO2 were never revealed and only part of the report was released by TfL.

Porsche said that the reason for the increase in CO2 was that motorists would be forced to drive longer distances outside the Congestion Zone as a result of the new charge.

All figures previously publicly released by TfL with regard to the impact of the new charge on CO2 emissions, including during the consultation process, related only to the position within the congestion charge zone, it added.

The King’s report shows that should mayor Ken Livingstone’s proposal go ahead there will be an increase in CO2 emitted in Greater London in each year from 2009.

By 2012, research shows that in Outer London the increase in CO2 will be nearly 184,000 tonnes, with just 2,200 tonnes saved in Central London giving a net increase of 182,000 tonnes.

The findings contradict the mayor’s claims that CO2 will fall.

Commenting on the release of this report, Andy Goss, managing director of Porsche Cars GB, said: ‘We always knew the environmental impact of this unfair tax would be minimal, now we know it will make matters worse.

'The Mayor and TfL need to explain why this report was not disclosed and why they want to increase taxes on motorists that will increase CO2.’

The King’s report estimates the total impact on CO2 in both Central and Outer London, and shows that ‘most of the emissions impacts happen in the outer location and this is a direct result of the high car traffic flow in the outer zone and the change of the vehicle km in this location.’

Because of this new charge, drivers are likely to increase their mileage outside of and around the zone and thus increase their emissions, said Goss.

‘It seems absolutely clear that the report shows that not only have Mayor Livingstone and TfL not presented all of the information to the public about the impact of his £25 charge, but that they have also created a new tax on motorists that will do the exact opposite of its stated goal,’ he added.

We all know the congestion charge is not in place to solve congestion, its just another tax!!!

Keep up the good work Porsche, it would be good to see more car manufacturers battling against this too!

Now there is a surprise.... NOT!

Finally some hard facts that show them up for what they really are, as in not really interested in the environment at all, but just in making more money from taxing the motorists unfairly yet again!

I just hope Porsche's case makes a difference... and if not, then that the elections will!

Now isn't that unusual not presenting all the information to the public, dear oh dear, what will else won't they reveal to us. Certainly seems to carry more weight against Livinstone and his cronies.

Fantastic!!!!

This has really made my day, this is definatly good news for motorists and common sense in general even if porsche's reasons are a little more financially directed than there letting on.

I would be surprised if they manage to beat this, it seems to be the way the world is going. Unfortunately.

He won't. Hell just ignore it and press ahead anyway.

Or

Expect it to be renamed something else instead.

TfL attempt a whitewash? Surely not!

For those that have forgotten, a report that detailed how much (i.e. most) of London's air pollution was due to Ken's beloved buses was also buried, though it was leaked/FOI'd. These buggers care nothing for the truth, they just want your money.

I'd wager that if I had £1 for every piece of motorist-friendly information that has mysteriously never seen the light of day I'd probably have enough to buy a Porsche!

ok...sorry to be a tree hugger...but please explain

"the reason for the increase in CO2 was that motorists would be forced to drive longer distances outside the Congestion Zone as a result of the new charge"

So those people who want to travel in to central london, will have to pay £25 if their car has large co2 emissions...so as a result they will travel further outside of london?

Why...

I have to pay to get into London...so dagnamit I will just drive around outside it as I am so upset about the charge...

Even if they use the excuse that businesses and meetings will move outside of London so therefore people will travel else where - I doubt this will effect the Porsche commuters I see ever morning in the City.

Brilliant. New York has scrapped the idea and now it appears Dead Ken is actively encouraging MORE pollution in London. You couldn't write this, you really couldn't. Just waiting for, "In a shock move London Mayor Ken Livingstone has offered all Porsche drivers an exemption to the London Congestion Charge after Porsche GB boss Andy Goss apparently revealed he has a raft of incriminiating images showing Livingstone being whipped by hookers dresssed as Stalin..."

I think it means people who might drive across the charging zone will instead be compelled to drive around it - a much longer journey.
