BMW reveals concept that pays tribute to M1 supercar

BMW M1 Hommage
BMW M1 Hommage
The BMW M1 celebrated its 30th birthday this weekend at the Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa d'Este.

In honour of the quirky supercar BMW wheeled out the new M1 Hommage, a car that not only pays tribute to the original design but gives a nod towards the company’s vision of a future supercar.

The likelihood of an M1 successor is not totally out of the realms of possibility and rumour has it the company is working on a twin-turbo V10 supercar for 2012.

The idea is to take on cars such as the Audi R8 and Mercedes SL Black Series.

The M1 Hommage is a forward-thinking design with retro detailing, says BMW, and is instantly recognisable as an M1.

It retains a louvered rear window, two badges on the back and even has a similar wheel design.

Only the front has a different design, with the pop-up lights binned in favour of deep-set quad headlamps.

BMW says it is only a design study to celebrate the original, and as such there is no engine or interior.

One thing I can say is you really don't realise how big the concept is until you see it next to the original car.

There's a definite lag on here between the posting of a news story and the appearance of the accompanying images. Maybe I notice it more with an RSS feed of PH articles.

PH tech people: Is there any particular reason why the images and text can't go live at the same time?

They should spend more time on doing something creative with there current range than showing us these bloody concepts.

I cant think of any BMW that i would wish to buy today.

me, but I like that too, especially the wheels. The headlights look good too.
I don't think BMW have made a good looking car since the Z8

I like that concept. I certainly looks the part.

I notice they also they have included the 1972 BMW Turbo concept, that I believe had the 4 cylinder 2002 turbo engine in it, but with 280 bhp and a top speed of 160 mph. Only two were ever built and it was BMW's first ever mid engined car.

I think I like that the most!

I like it, but love those wheels!

I didn't realise there were so many BMW haters out there? Each to their own i guess? And yes, i am a BMW owner, and very proud of my car.

Cars seem to be getting wider. Silly wide.
Great for "the ring" and "the autobahn" but not for Devon, i.e. here.
Elise much better.

You are right there. Cars are getting wider and fatter. It might be the fact that more safety features need to be implemented.

Look at the city cars of 10 or 20 years ago and look at a modern "city" car.

Regarding the M1, the original one was designed by Giugiaro, who designed this one?

What a load of crap. That concept looks crap.

I'd rather have my car anyday.

I quite like it but it's too big and the front end of the bonnet is too high up. It slope down to a lower point to look like a true supercar.

I think the new pedestrian impact laws have put the kibosh on that.

I dont really like it. I'm not much of a fan of any retro designs. To me it suggests a company is creatively bankrupt.

As much as people hated the Bangle look, I'll give the man credit for moving the game on. No I don’t necessarily like his designs either, but it was an attempt at a fresh design, that worked for its intended function. I too don’t really find much in the BMW range appealing. They have good results, but their prices are far too high for what they are. Without looking at any specific model, I can say that as a brand, Lexus offer a lot of things as standard that many other brands make you pay through the nose for. Its this reason why I drive Lexus. And not only that, I’d rather a second hand lexus than a new one, so that all that nasty depreciation has been paid for by someone else.

Odd...I'd say the Lexus = creatively bankrupt.

As for the BMW, if that was black it would look amazing, the lights are very sinister.

I thought it looked good until I saw the picture of it parked next to a proper M1. Then it just looks gash.
