Chris Evans Spends £5m On A Ferrari

New world record for Ferrari 250 GT California at Maranello sale

DJ Chris Evans broke a new auction record at the weekend by spending £5.6million on a stunning black 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider.

The car had previously belonged to actor James Coburn and was for sale at RM Auctions' second annual 'Ferrari Leggenda e Passione' auction event in Maranello, Italy.

A relaxed-looking Evans attended on Saturday with his wife, golf pro and writer Natasha Shishmanian.

The radio personality was said to have fallen for the car while at the auction and in the end his bid of $10,894,900 exceeded all expectations.

The sale surpassed the previous record set at Sotheby's Monaco in 1990 for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO at $10,756,000.

The 250 California was estimated to sell for just half that price.

The annual RM Ferrari auction held in association with Sotheby's, put under the hammer a hugecollection of historic Ferraris at the legendary home of Ferrari in Maranello.

I met him years ago before the riches. He's huge and ginger. Not even the 250 would make me want to. A 275 i'd briefly consider it.

Wow, of all the cars he could have picked up at that auction he went home with that.
All Ferraris are ace but when seen in the company of an F40LM or a 333SP that 250 looks weak.

Still, it his money so he can spend it how he likes I guess...

He made his fortune firstly by selling the rights to Don't Forget Your Toothbrush all over the world, his Ginger production company produced it and TFI and many other programmes. He sold his Ginger Media Group which he formed to run Virgin radio and Ginger productions to SMG for £285m in 2000. So I doubt that he is skint!
I admire whats he's done business wise and he's boned Billie Piper!

He sold his Ginger media productions for £285 million, £5 million on one car is nothing to him, just another car to go with his fleet of rare exotic cars.

Apparently worth £45M according to the Times Rich List. Good for him though, he's clearly pretty damn shrewd (and entertaining to boot!)

He is worth quite a bit more than that. Plus his various other business concerns

Mind you. I'd prefer a LWB and that isn't where my £5m would go.

As much as that is my favourite car, and if i was minted i could spend a lot of cash on it, but £5mill.

jaysus.

you could get Pininfarina to build you a brand new one for much less than that!

i also wonder what price the Burgundy 250 California went for, and whether evans was just paying a premium for James Coburn's car?

Nice, but not £5.6 mil nice. You could call it an investment but I doubt it'll sell for that much again.

wow timewatch how do you manage to type when you're obviously blind.
The 250 California is one of the best looking V12 engined soft tops ever to grace this earth, plonker.
