Audi unveils 221bhp oil-burning hot hatch concept

If you are getting sick of Audi banging on about hot diesels then it may be best to turn away now.

The firm has rolled out the Audi A3 TDi Clubsport quattro, a hot hatch concept that shows how much power could potentially be squeezed out of the 2.0 TDI lump.

The car is unlikely to go into production any time soon but Audi wants to show that a diesel hot hatch can be brisk – this car does 0-62mph in 6.6secs and 149mph, while peak torque is available from 1750rpm.

The diesel engine produces 221bhp and a hefty 332lb ft of torque.

There are 20” wheels, carbon-ceramic discs with six-piston callipers, and a six-speed manual gearbox.

As you would expect the car comes with four-wheel drive and has been developed by the quattro division.

The whole thing has been finished off with a lairy bodykit and Lambo LP560/4 style front spoiler.

I would love a car like that minus the silly colour combo and graphics on the side.

221bhp & 332lb ft? Hardly groundbreaking stuff when they say:

Just imagine the smoke clouds this thing will leave in it's wake when you floor the loud pedal...

It's pointless trying to make a diesel into something it's not meant to be imo.

I like the sound of this. Currently drive a Subaru Impreza STI PPP, and I'm considering swapping it in for a Diesel.

Never thought I'd say that, but petrol prices are just a joke now. I'm finding it hard to justify buying something else that gets 20 odd mpg on a good run. Less than 20mpg on a spirited drive.

Looking at either a Golf/A3/Scirroco 2.0 170 TDI.

So having it with 221BHP would be far more appealing.

It looks hideous! Really not keen on the front styling and those large air intakes. If it was all black, then maybe ... Just!

pah, jabbasport can tune the 1.9 tdi lump to 230hp, so this is quite weak and probably a LOT more expensive.

Er, 0-60 in 6.6 and 149mph is exactly the same as the current 2.0 turbo petrol, which apparently has less power and a lot less torque.

The numbers look wrong to me.

Ah, another "driver's" car for people who wouldn't know (or care) whether the car was powered by petrol, diesel, nuclear fission or horse meat. There'd be none of this nonsense without the dubious CO2 racket.

so you don't think 110.5bhp per litre from a diesel is very impressive? and 166lb ft per litre is not very good?

No because the petrol will have power from 2,500 rpm -> 6,500, whereas the diesel will have peak power from 4,250->4400.. [/scarcasm, but not really..]

I wouldn't expect hundreds of thousands of JabbaSport engines to reach 100,000 miles without major expense.

The engine sounds decent but the over-sized grill, air intakes and wheels just look daft.

Oh my lord that's hideous!

I'd rather have a normal A3 and get it remapped. Wouldn't be far off the performance of this and look much less shocking.
