Old School Targa Top For 911

Aftermarket retro Targa available for convertible Porsche 911s

Remember the Porsche Targa roof? Not the sliding panel thing that the carmaker fits to its cars these days, the classic old school Targa top that was fitted to 911s for decades.

Many owners were sad at the demise of the slightly oddball but wonderfully retro Targa – but the good news for them it is back!

A German enthusiast who wanted that traditional Targa look in his new 997 has created one that will fit on to any convertible model.

It has the removable panel and built in roll bar that is infinitely more satisfying than the twin sliding sunroof that makes the Targa of today.

The Targa-style roof is developed by a company called VeloTech and it is available at a price of £5,000.

The reason for the high price is apparently because it is largely made from carbon fibre.

Slightly strange maybe, but I kind of like this. Not something that I imagine will be a great success though at any price...

I have to say I love it, I was watching the film The Business last night so that might have something to do with it, but £5000, ouch

Well done that man! I've always loved the old skool targa and think this looks very well made indeed. Is it worth £5k tho?

great idea! Looks great to. I dont think 5000 is alot either considering there will not be many around. Hard to tell form pics but it looks like a quality item and made from carbon to keep weight down!

Very nicely done. looks great and at 5000 i dont think is a lot. There will not be many of them either. With so many 911's around this is one way to stand out in the crowd

I love targas. Why do they seem to have a bad name amongst Porsche owners?
Shirly you get the majority of the benefits of a cab, without
a) losing rigidity,
b) looking like a posing tit
?

Been on my wish list for as long as I can remember...

Thinking about it as a business. If they could get in with Porsche and sell it to customers as a genuine Porsche accessory as well as direct then they would be able to attract many more customers. Something like this is a great solution to a very small market, so it is all about getting infront of people who own Porsche's of the right age and want this. Good luck to them.

Why would you not lose rigidity? There's still the absence of a continuous link between the front and rear at roof level, so I suspect a targa would be as flexible as a convertible. That said, I love the look of it!

I agree there. Enjoy the wind in your hair and the exhaust note without being as conspicuous as you are in a convertible. It's a shame Ferrari don't still do targas.

You still look like a posing tit, just one who couldn't be arsed going the whole way with a full drop top. They also flex and rattle as much as a convertible and they leak a bit, or a lot if the roof is in poor condition. So basically most of the downsides of the converstible, except they are a bit more secure when parked (can't cut the roof open like a proper droptop).

oh and they look crap (IMO).

They only good thing about them is they are usually the cheapest 911s second hand.
