In December 2002 Parkers listed this hatchback in A1 cond. at £595.
8 months later it is now listed at... £3,060.
Were they wildly out in December or is this the fastest appreciating 'classic' in recent times?
See last page of new issue of EVO if u can't stand the agony.

I don't buy Evo so have absolutely no idea what car you going on about, as I sure the majority reading this will to.

So put me out of my misery and tell me or I won't get a wink of sleep tonight worrying about it.

Not got EVO yet but i'll guess....... 205 gti ?
Every review of the new 206 180bhp Gti seems to lament its passing (and quite rightly too).

Was £595, now £3060 ?

Was it Rally prepped during that time?

Ok, here's some clues before u look in mag.
A mate of mine has 1 of these and it embarrasses some VERY quick machinery! Some even take the first exit to save the embarrassment -Ho, ho. He blew away a Evo last week and said jokingly, that the driver stopped in a layby, probably to check if his bottle of Sunny Delight had rolled under his seat and got stuck under the throttle!!!!!!!! I liked that.
Price by the way is for one in standard form.
There are some indecently quick ones out there - a heavily modded one holds the record as the fastest FWD saloon in the world.
To most people the car is a joke (bit warmer now?) but a set of lowered spring, decent dampers and set of alloys borrowed from a stablemate and its original not so good handling is transformed. A Pug incidently could NOT live with it.

Sounds similar to the guy that was along side me whilst waiting for the quarter mile run at Santa Pod. He was in a Focus RS and chickened out at the last minute, so that i could race a Clio 1.2 Oasis... I was the clear winner in that one..

already mentioned - it's an MG MAESTRO TURBO. Don't laugh, prices are likely to rise even higher - get this: a Maestro Turbo appears in the next Playstation Gran Turismo 4 out late Dec.

As for the fastest FWD in the world - it is H899 MOV - Andy Nicholls (well it was, he's just sold it) and unlike the other cars mentioned here this Maestro is ROAD LEGAL!!!!!!! Andy actually drives it to work. Figs i have are standing 1/4 mile, 120 mph 12.4 secs, 0-100 8.2s. 330 bhp at flywheel

But how many can there be still around in standard form? They only made about 600 in the first place, I shouldn't think more than half are still on the road.

God, I could have had one of those cars about ten years ago, but was scared of the insurance and went for the 2.0i instead

505 Maestro Turbos to be exact and surprisingly a lot still survive - i believe over half are registered on an MG site, despite all the rust woes. True they do rot, but its mainly cosmetic like arches , unlike Fords which disintegrate in hidden vital areas like strut turrets! A strange statistic is the Montego Turbo had a production run in excess of 7,000 yet it seems fewer of these survive than the Maestro version - thanks to the press slagging them off many think they are worthless and scrap them - its not unknown for 1 owner cars to be told its worth nothing and ACTUALLY have driven them to yards, complete with tax and mot and watched them put in the crusher! Values on these are too rising steeply, not surprisingly.

Hardly road legal is it? Andy's old car used road legal tyres and was taxed and mot'ed, making it the fastest FWD car in the UK, and most definatly the fastest Maestro in the world! Fastest road legal FWD car in the states will be different, no doubt Mitsubishi Eclipse's etc hold that title.

And to prove that they still make naff fast cars:

www.dodge.com/srt-4/index.html?context=homepage&type=vehicle_nav

To quote the site:

SRT-4's engine is a turbocharged and intercooled 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder that produces an impressive 230-horsepower and 250 lb. ft. of torque. Producing that kind of power from a 2.4-liter engine is one thing, but few could make it work day-in and day-out like SRT-4.
New Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing (ATB) differential to help put the power to the ground
Dual-outlet exhaust system
0-60 in under six seconds with a 148 mph (electronically limited) top speed
High capacity clutch and pressure plate
Fully independent MacPherson struts on the front suspension

maestro turbo was a quick motor.
however, they didnt corner at all ever.they really didnt stop all that well.hence there are very few left bue to impact damage.then there was the tin worm that destroyed the few that were left.
and as for crash safety they were less safe in a crash than a mini filled with pointed sticks

There's a few VAG 1.8T FWD cars pushing 400 bhp. Somebody out there probably has one with even more.

I really rate the standard 2.0 Efi MG Maestro, I have to say I have never tried a Turbo, but I did spend some time in a Montego Turbo which was quick but not nice (I preferred the standard EFi). I think they were slagged off at the time for no other reason than it was fashionable to do so. If you compare them with their mainstream competitors of the period they were really very good cars. I think with all the choice that we have now, folks forget what it was like twenty years ago. If you were a rep, you could have a 1.6L Sierra/Cavalier/Montego and that was it, the press always rated the Montego as the best, but nobody believed them. Going up market you could have a 2 litre Sierra, or a Cavalier CD, or an MG Montego, again I would have the latter.

I remember that CAR magazine did a giant test at the time for the best hot hatch, the article was called 'Exploding the GTI myth' if I remember rightly.

Anyway, top spot went to the Strada Abarth, then the MG, stuff like the XR3i, GTE , GTI etc was way down the list.

This car won Sports Compact Of The Year in a new American Sports Compact magazine which specialises in fast imports like Subarus and the like so don't dismiss it so lightly. No wait, it's American, I forgot you have to condemn the car before knowing anything about it, let alone driving it.
