Fuel Prices 'Cut Accidents'

High fuel prices in the US are saving lives, claim experts

High fuel prices have driven road deaths in the US down to their lowest level since the 1960s, it has been claimed. Experts believe that motorists are driving less and slower because of the high costs and this is having a direct affect on casualties.

The number of fatalities could fall by 10% this year to around 37,000, the lowest since 1961, according to research that suggests it is down to a reduction in leisure travel.

The University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute found that the number of fatalities slumped by 22% in March and by 18% in April, around the same time that global oil prices were soaring.

‘It seems as if we have changed our driving behaviour rapidly and drastically,’ said Michael Sivak, a professor at the institute. ‘There’s been a lot of coverage on how you can squeeze a few extra miles out of your tank – driving slowly is one way to do that.’

I trust we're going to have a comment from Captain Gatso to disabuse anyone of the notion that median speed has an impact on RTA rates.

Could it be that people are driving less? or the fact that Americans are not buying the unsafe trucks, but driving in safer european cars such as 3 series?

I can see where this is going. I bet the Furher that is known as Gordon Brown will use this as an excuse to keep petrol prices high.

How long before 'our' politically correct nubbies pick up on this one?

Give it a few more minutes...

Ahh, here's the first one already...

PRESS RELEASE from BRAKE

We believe, in view of this considered expert opinion from the most respected institute in the USA, that there is now 'real' scope for introducing punative fuel price increases.

The gain will be fewer road deaths and accidents and we applaud anything to this end. We suggest a new £10 a litre price at the pump (with a corresponding increase in diesel, of course). The savings will be enormous - accidents cut at a stroke, traffic flow increased, and for those hardest hit they can get fitter and healthier by walking or cycling.

Rediculous.

I take it this will be read by some idiot MP and turned into yet another way the government can tax the road user.

37,000 road deaths a year? Thats a lot compared to our 3,500 - bearing in mind they have a population 5 times what we do.

I think the 'less' has probably got more to do with it, to be honest.

As for 'has anyone changed their driving?' - yes, I'm now using more fuel as I have to overtake even MORE slow people nowadays!!! Inconsiderates... hehe

I'm sure you're right, I was just tickled to see it parroted unchallenged in a PH article.

"Pistonheads: Making the fuel shortage worse since 2001!"

Or maybe "You keep your fuel economy, I'll keep using your share of the fuel!"

David Milliband this is one dangerous man.

He would start a war !

Just listen to his rants about Russia, he is a total bellicose dictator in the waiting and must never be allowed to be PM or take other high ranking office of any kind.

Why is anyone even bothering to comment on this (including me?!)?

The article is contradictory - first it states a reduction in accidents, then in deaths. Which is it? The latter does not necessarily mean the former - all it indicates is that there are just as many crashes, just that airbags are working against natural selection... rolleyes
