Motorists Face Fuel Price Misery

If you thought that pump prices were about to fall, then think again.

While the price of crude oil has been falling steadily in recent weeks - with the price drop not reflected at the pumps - then a decision today means lower prices are even less likely.

That's because the oil producers association OPEC has decided to cut production to keep the price of oil per barrel above $100.

The AA has accused oil firms of 'dragging their feet' and failing to cut prices for consumers fast enough.

Prices have fallen nearly 30 per cent from the $147 high in July but prices at petrol stations have not fallen as quickly, with unleaded down from July's peak of 119.7p to around 112.7p - a drop of nearly 6 per cent.

Average diesel prices have fallen from 133.3p to 124.1p, just under 7 per cent.

People have cut back on travel, so to keep the profits the same, the oil companies have not reduced the price.

As soon as crude oil goes up immediately afterwards pump prices do exactly the same. The moment crude comes down pump prices rise a little more and then come down very very slowly as if time has ssssstttttooooopppppeeeeeddddd.

The oil companies/refineries and petrol retailers are all a bunch of thieving cunst and there's no two ways about it!! Whatever happens they have you by the cojones, and unless we all stopped using our cars for a couple of weeks in protest the prices will never come down to a meaningful level.

And those of you that make your own biodiesel.....I thought i heard UKGOV announce that although home made diesel is duty free for the first 2500lts, they are going to start making you do a course in biodiesel manufacturing that costs £1000 or something stupid, just to make sure they know you do it all nice and safe. If they don't get you one way...they'll get you another.

Somebody get them out FFS!!!

OPEC how do they get away with saying they're not going to let it drop below $100 per barrel? isn't it just blatant price fixing? annoying that the price goes up very quickly - yet doesn't fall hardly at all...

The cost of the crude oil is a very small part of the price of petrol at the pumps, so of course the price of petrol won't drop by the same proportion as the cost of crude oil has done. If the price of petrol is to fall by a really significant amount the only way is for the tax to be reduced - and it isn't going to happen.

"Very small part" - err... not true. Given that each time the price goes up the petrol pump price goes up with it.

In the lasy 5 years the Tax (fuel duty) has gone up just 2p per litre, and yet the price at the pump was 74.9p in 2002... the recent and not so recent increases are everything to do with price of Crude, price fixing, production and demand. Yes the price is so high due in part to tax, but all recent noteworthy increases are nothing to do with the UK Govt (at least not directly) - and yes I'm aware VAT goes up at Price goes up, but the increases in VAT is spurned by increases at pump.

Hey Guys, can I just remind you that the UK has over 350 YEARS supply of grade A accessible coal reserves at current consumption levels, and a whole lot more besides, ( estimated 500ish years ).

We can make diesel and petrol from coal you know ( most people dont ), and South Africa just as one example has been getting their petrol in this way for over 60 years !!.

Just think, secure indigenous energy supply, no more beholden to foriegn powers, no more political blackmail.

The reasons we dont do this are many,( bugger all to do with the environment actually ), but include trade agreements, political necessities, and greedy clean-hands profiteers.

Its greed from the oil companies trying to keep it aboove $100. mainly Iran as they were the main force behind the cutback. Kuwait was happy with the current levels.

Also with the recent small decrease in pump prices we are forgetting that the main issue is the tax from our own government. while prices are slowly falling the overall % of duty is rising which shows how high it must have been a few years ago if duty has not raised much over the years but overall prices have
