Gallardo Panda Car

Italian traffic police fight fire with fire

Not a pleasant sight in your mirrors!
Not a pleasant sight in your mirrors!
Police in the Lazio region of Italy have a new weapon in the battle against the hordes of Fiat 500 Abarths terrorising the nation’s highways.

The Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia is a factory ‘police special’ that entered service with Lazio’s finest at the weekend with a mission ‘to continue accident and crime prevention and sustain security on the Italian roads’. Roughly translated, the gift means Lamborghini test drivers should not have to worry too much about license points when burning up the blacktop in factory development hacks for another couple of years…

The LP560-4 Polizia will replace a police Gallardo introduced in 2004 which has apparently clocked up 87,000k with no major repairs required and only routine servicing.

The new model is fitted with the latest advances in police technology including video and gps-based equipment that uploads evidence of motoring transgressions in real time to police computers. The crime-busting supercar also carries more traditional items like a gun holster and the famous ‘Paletta’ hand-shaped stop sign that Italian highway patrols use to flag down their prey.

30 police officers are permitted to drive the Gallardo Polizia, and all have received special training from the aforementioned factory test drivers.

Thats nothing - Norfolk Constabulary has a 1998 Ford Escort LX Diesel Panda car with no wheel trims - now THAT is a police car...The flag ship of their massively impressive fleet however is a lovely M reg Ford Mondeo 2.0 SI -

I think I might start a new thread which British county has the worst fleet of police cars? - Norfolk must be in the top 5...

Which is fine... As in my experience of Norfolk no one goes over about 45mph, at any cost, ever.

"Norfolk Constabulary has a 1998 Ford Escort LX Diesel Panda car with no wheel trims - now THAT is a police car" laugh - Brilliant!

I swear I passed a Metro police car (not a class B either!) in North Wales about 12 years back...at a hell of a pace on back road, that put the shudders up me...I slowed down, if only out of sympathy for the Copper and to Marvel at his wheels. My Grandmother used to drive one and it brought back some horrific memories smile

You can bet your bottom dollar that our Chief Constables would be after something similar if Labour had not already bancrupted this country -hence the lovely fleet cars mentioned above.

You might laugh - but only a few years ago one of our Met's finest gun cars was a very subtle MG Montego.

Please tell me it was like the one my Dad had in the eighties with a talking dash - The old Turbo version was pretty quick - well, quicker than a diesel escort anyway! - I suppose as an under cover car no would think twice - the Derv powered escort was marked - the mondeo SI was that "police issue" solid dark blue they do
