Tata Asks PM for £1bn

Indian firm asks for £1bn to bail-out Jaguar Land Rover

Land Rover sales have been hit hard
Land Rover sales have been hit hard
The Indian Tata Group, Jaguar Land Rover’s new owner, is asking the British Government for a £1billion loan to safeguard the brands, it has been reported. Tata paid Ford £1.7bn for the two manufacturers in March but recently the worldwide car industry has been hit hard by economic downturn.

‘Government intervention is required to improve liquidity in the supply chain and support continued investment in carbon-reduction technology as well as stimulating consumer demand,’ said a Jaguar statement. The company would not comment on the exact nature of its confidential discussions with Government, or on the £1 billion loan that was mentioned in press reports earlier this week.

‘The automotive industry is facing unprecedented trading conditions as a direct fallout of the banking crisis and turbulence in the financial markets,’ added a spokesman, ‘and we are of course keeping Government appraised of the impact of our business.’

The Prime Minister is now understood to be considering the proposal and will make a decision in the next few weeks. While the new XF saloon has meant Jaguar's year-on-year worldwide sales are slightly up, the company has faced a severe fall in demand recently, particularly in its traditional markets of Europe and the US. Land Rover’s year-on-year sales are also slightly up, but demand has plummeted in the last couple of months, with UK sales down about 40%.

This an interesting one, as Landrover could be classed as a key defence contractor. This one I'll watch with interest.

Heres an idea, do what MINI do, build your cars to order.

Stop building so many if the demand is down and you wont be so out of pocket!

This is a joke right??

TATA....huge multi-billion pound organisation and one of the very richest and most profitable companies on this planet asking our UKGOV for a £billion.

They didn't have to buy LR or Jag but they did...in which case deal with it!!

Maybe i'll do the same and ask UKGOV for a handout to help my ailing british company. No doubt though i'd be told to effoff!! I would hope they tell TATA exactly the same!! LR and Jag aren't british any more therefore TATA should instead be asking the Indian gov for a handout however, i bet the Indian gov will also tell them to effoff!!

What are they going to do if they don't get their way??....Threaten to shed umpteen British jobs or shutdown UK production and completely move production over to india sooner rather than later so they can preserve the brand!!

TATA are taking the p155!!

+ 1

I always wondered how long before the sting in the tail was felt. To be fair it could have happened with any buyer I suspect- it just seemed almost predictable with Tata somehow. Scrounging gits.

Give em the money... but make it a condition that ALL jags and LR's are made in the UK; none abroad. Oh...and do it like the banks - take half of the company too

Just last week there was a thread on this forum saying how stupid GM and Chrysler were for relying on "big thirsty cash-cows" such as 4x4s and failing to meet demand for more economical and efficient vehicles.

Looks like Land Rover fell in to the same trap, and has no parent company or diversity of products to bail it out.

Silly billies.

Meanwhile, the likes of Honda are able to weather the storm because they have products and finances to see them through.

Abso-bloody-lutely.

Government "handout" ought to equal "we are taking a large share of your business so, in a few years time when it's worth money, we can sell it off and give the public a tax holiday".

Of course. Labour tried nationalising the auto-industry once before. Anyone remember British Leyland? Their cars were st. Maybe even this bunch of incompetent fools are wary of doing that again...

As said, Land Rover are 4x4's so not sure what their alternative is, but they have schemes to make them more acceptable (read economical and green) overall, but need time to make them reality.

With Honda shutting Swindon for two months I am not sure that their products are fairing any better than those from Land Rover.

Just because they HAVE put all their eggs into one basket doesn't mean anyone FORCED them to. Even the defender costs a bloody fortune to buy and run. They have no Suzuki Jimney/Dihatsu Terrios rival, and no tie-ups with other manufacturers... they fked themselves, and if Tata don't want to deal with it, why did they buy them?

I would suggest it wanted the name in the same way that BMW wanted Rover for the Mini name, and nothing else.

Too little too late on the green stuff then perhaps? And Honda may not get rich out of the current crisis, but at least they were savvy enough to prepare for it, and they WILL survive as a result.

WTF!!!!

First we had the government giving our money to the censored, sorry bankers in the city so they could still give themselves huge bonuses*

...and now Brown is even considering giving our money to a foreign company - what's this censored doing to this country!!!!!

aaarrrrrhhhhhHHHHHHHH!!! rage

  • apparently the top bosses of the UK banks have between them recieved over £54million in the past four years! The whole financial problem is a total cop-out.
We've let them walk all over us and this government seems quite happy to be their gimp in the process - stinks!
