Be afraid! Yet another motoring tax
Discussion
A goverment think tank (now where are my tankbuster missiles when I need them?) has suggested charging motorists 16p per mile for driving on rural roads & 32p a mile for driving on urban roads by using the latest satellite technology.
In return they may abolish road tax.
Doing the maths, this means that instead of being able to drive unlimited mile for my £160 road tax, I'll be able to drive 1000miles per year in the countryside or 500miles into town.
The last suggesting from this think tank resulted in part of the national railway being bought back by the government withion 2 weeks of its publication.

The practicality of fitting GPS technology to cars and ensuring it worked (wrap the antennae in tinfoil and there's and end to it...) will make implementing anything like this impossible.
I believe it MUCH more likely that we will see Kengenstion charging in more and more urban areas as cities leap on the bandwagon to increase revenues.
They will do it, of course, only if Ken's charge is a success.
Oh. Oh dear - its a foregone conclusion then...as Ken's charge will be hailed as a success no matter what the real outcome is...

Maybe they will make it so the car doesn't start if the GPS doesn't get a signal.
Easily circumvented.
If you realise what a state the DVLA is in, this being the reason that the recording of mileage on the V5s is optional & the police have such a hard time, then putting GPS in each vehicle will be a challenge.
What about the mileage correction companies? I might start one up & start printing money!
