Detroit '09: New Subaru Legacy Unveiled
Concept previews more aggressive look for Legacy
Subaru has previewed its next Legacy with a teaser shot ahead of the Detroit Motor Show. The Legacy concept car will be unveiled at the show next month and reveals more aggressive styling than the conservative current model.
The front bumper wraps around to extended wheel arches and there is a chunky front grille. The lights are a completely new design but will likely be toned down for the production model.
The concept is powered by the firm’s 3.6-litre boxer unit although the new diesel engine is expected to be a big seller in the production model. Like other carmakers Subaru is struggling to keep afloat, having canned its rally team yesterday.
Discussion
Oh joy, a teaser shot. Very moody and agressive looking in the picture.
However, call me a cynic, but as fetching as it looks in the pic, in the flesh I expect it'll look like a lump of cheap plastics left in the heat for too long, with no redeeming features whatsoever. The intriguing headlights will actually be vile, and most people would rather see their granny fisting herself centre stage at the 02 arena, wearing fetish gear and giving private dances to robert mugabe, than look at the newest scoob.
Just a sneaky suspicion. I do hope it looks good in the flesh, but given that subaru seem to have handed over their design department to the early learning centre, let's just say I'll be surprised if it's nice. After all, the latestbastidisation incarnation of the impreza looked quite interesting when it was first shown in teaser format ...

Haha, thats brilliant! Made me laugh out loud and now my colleagues think Im even more weird than they did 5 minutes ago...
Legacys have always been a more restrained design than the Impreza. The current generation is a superb example of conservative styling, so much so that as long as they don't substantially bugger up the proportions, that new, slightly aggressive look will do it no harm.
And if they put the 3.6 litre engine in, it'll not sell a single one in the UK, thanks to our govt's persecution based on CO2 output.
But if they could build a flat-6 diesel with an auto (no auto currently available for the high-torque flat-4 diesel), I reckon they'll sell every one they can make. I'd have one. As much as I like that they've designed a flat-4 diesel, I was a bit underwhelmed with the performance compared with my flat-6 petrol. I certainly don't want to be going backwards in terms of performance but I'd welcome a powerful, relatively (next to my petrol) cheap to run diesel.

The big mistake Subaru made was to not sell the Legacy GT B Spec in the UK... In Oz you buy it as a Liberty with the 2.5 turbo out of the Impreza and a six speed box plus of course the Bilstein suspension kit.
The UK never got the twin-turbo GT/RS/RSB/GTB/RSK/Blitzen either did it?Pity, I really quite like my GTB
